Default Who's on our banknotes and brief history of Aus?

Now, I've been wondering who's on our banknotes for a while... I recognise that old bird called Liz from the $5.00 bill, but who are the other gals and geysers on the other notes and what did they achieve?
I also was wondering if anyone is knowledgeable enough and can be bothered (to be frank) to give us a brief history of Aus and notable Australians, so us newly arrived Poms and wannabees aren't quite so ignorant
Thanks in advance

Ten Bucks (look closely):

THERE was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
That the colt from old Regret had got away,
And had joined the wild bush horses — he was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far
Had mustered at the homestead overnight,
For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
And the stock-horse snuffs the battle with delight.

OK...

The $5 note that was issued on 1 January 2001
is 65 x 130 mm in size
Signed by IJ Macfarlane at the top and by EA Evans at the bottom
The front Portrait is Sir Henry Parkes (1815–1896)
and the back is Catherine Helen Spence (1825–1910)
and it was designed by Gary Emery

The earlier $5 note was issued on 7 July 1992, and again on 24 April 1995 but as a recoloured version
It is 65 x 130 mm in size
and was signed by IJ Macfarlane at the top and KR Henry at the bottom
The front Portrait is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
with the back a poicture of the Old and New Parliament House
This was Designed by Bruce Stewart
