We do not have the long evenings that the UK has. However, neither does it get dark at 4pm.
I suspect your choices may be more limited by the job prospects in various cities.

I reckon it is well after 9pm when it is really completely dark in Melbourne in summer.

adelaide is IMHO the single best place in the country to raise a family. it is extremely safe, great community feeling and great schools and unis. not sure how good the aviation industry is here but it is tiger airway's second hub, theres talk about a new terminal etc. as it is not as south as scotland is north, you wont experience such late sunsets in the summer but in winter it means that it isnt dark at 4. great weather here, gets quite hot here in summer but pleasant more most months except sometimes feb can be a bit too much. winter here is short and reasonably rainy but you'll be glad to see some if youve got a garden. also adelaide is great as it is the most affordable big city in the country. very cheap housing (average around 350,000 dollars). and the city sprawls along the beach if thats something your interested in.
