Default Where to stay in Melbourne?

We've just booked our flights for our reccie in March 06, and are trying to find accomodation in Melbourne (for 1 week).
Just wondered whether anyone has done the same and has any recommendations/advice on where to stay?

www.wotif.com is pretty good and now books 28 days in advance.
Just filter on Melbourne CBD, and as CBD is pretty small (3kms by 3kms ish) you will be central enough to look around. You can also choose serviced apartments, which are pretty good.
Otherwise St Kilda is a good location to stay in.

Hi...we're moving out on Jan 16th 2006 and have booked a few nights here http://www.retrorentals.com.au/melbourne.html before our house in Elsternwick becomes available. It looks like a pretty funky place and Jo (who runs Retro Rentals) is really friendly and helpful.

In the CBD:-

Gateway Clarion Suites - too noisy for us

Quay West Suites - nice/great location/bit pricey

Thanks for this Mike, although we will not be booking this property (bit funky for two 30 somethings with kids!) it has links to other property web sites and we have now booked ourselves an Apartment.
