Where should I live in Sydney

Where should I live in Sydney
I'm trying to research house prices in Sydney. It's difficult because I haven't got a clue which areas are bad, good, posh, rough, or up&coming!
I would appreciate your input so I can compile a list of recomended areas for a family to live?
I can then check out http://www.domain.com.au to see where the best value properties are.
Well thats the plan anyhow!
All opinions are appreciated.

We are living in North Ryde. We have a young family. Rents seem affordable. Quite leafy and suburban. (my sister who lives in Maroubra on the South shore reckons it's like coming out to the country!) About 1/2 hour to the CBD and nearest beaches and good transport links....

1/2 an hour into the CBD????? I live in Paddington and it takes me 1/2 an hour to get into the CBD by the time I factor walking to the bus stop, catching bus, walking from bus stop to office. So i'd be amazed if it takes half an hour from North Ryde.

Manly and north Manly - love the fact it is 15 minutes on the Jet cat from CBD and right next to the beach, you can also go up to the northern beaches very easily. Down sides are it is expensive, expect to pay minimum $450 week for a 2 bed apartment. Also get lots of tourists etc. but this means it is lively, depends what you are after. Lots of restaurants and bars.
Balmain - very close to CBD again, old feel to it very community focused. Lots of old terraced houses, cafes and bars. Short hop on the ferry to darling harbour. Again pretty expensive but you will get a house for your money, prob about $400 - $450 per week for a 2 bed terraced.
Ranwick area - South of CBD, below Bondi and Bronte area, nice location again lots of cafes and bars, bit more family focused, not sure on rates in this area. 15-30 mins to CBD (apparently).
Hope this helps.

I wish we could afford to live in Manly I just love that beach so much. Oh I can dream.

Have to agree with everyone that Manly is fab- I grew up there & loved it-great for city-hopping & Balmain-very hip now/cute period properties. Also Newport & Bilgola very nice areas for families (Bilgola Heights lovely..) Apparently if you dont mind going further out Surry Hills good so I've heard (not been myself)

Wow, I have to say a big thank you, for all your replies. I feel all supported!
Many thanks everyone.
I am in IT (Microsoft specialist) and hope to go freelance when I arrive if possible.
I will be looking to buy, (but will rent if it looks like the market will fall, there is talk of a recession coming. But then there is always talk of recessions coming!)
(In Ozzy dollars)
I have $600,000 without a mortgage (lucky old me!).
If I can make a decent living in Sydney. Then I could get a mortgage of up to $250K to $300k. (Is that a big mortgage in OZ?)
Would like 3 beds, but I'm getting pressure from friends to get a fourth bed room. I guess they all have there holidays planed already. Mmmmmm, I wonder where!
Big Cheers all,
PS: What dose CBD mean?

In the areas that people have mnentioned I very much doubt you'll get a 4 bed place for your budget $850K (you need to leave about $50k aside for stamp duty, solicitor fees and moving costs). Three bed place you'll probably find in Balmain and Randwick, not sure about Manly though. Randwick is a bit of a nonentity in terms of architecture, location, and restaurants, hence it is the cheapest of the three areas mentioned.

Re: Where should I live in Sydney
If I had to return to live in Sydney (I hope that day never comes) the only places I would consider living at if I could afford it would be some parts of the north end of the northern beaches (Avalon, Palm beach, Whale Beach, Mona Vale).
But of course, In reality trying to get to the city would be a nightmare in peak hour (no train line) so that's why it would never happen.

Av has to be the cheapest of those 3, especially North Av, you're looking around 800k for a house and 600k for a unit for starters
the lack of train line is a blessing in disguise imo
where are you then 007?

i'd second that, except maybe MV... it's ok but it's not Av, Palmy or Whaley
