Default Where in Queensland ?

Right guys, me the missus and the sprog are looking to emigrate,
hopefully no later than the back end of next year.
I'm a cop with 9 years service, Wife is a soon to qualify nurse.
I'd be hoping to get into the Queensland police.
Now, we're trying to get an idea of where would be the best part of
Queensland to settle in.
We would be looking to buy a house in the $350,000 - $400,000 price
range, depending on the exchange rate when we come over.
We would like somewhere fairly quiet, but with facilities schools, shops
within a reasonable distance.
I'm fairly low maintenance and would be happy living somewhere
with plenty of countryside so I can get out on the mountain bike
and maybe the odd good pub
The missus would require clothes shops hair salons etc. at least within
a reasonable drive.
The littun, well she's into her martial arts and goes to Brownies over
here (do you have Brownies in Oz?) so ideally would be able to do
this sort of thing over there.
The missus has an Aunt and Uncle who live in Southport, but
apart from that there's nothing stopping us considering any part
of Queensland.
Any thoughts/ advice will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Steve

Queensland is very big indeed (think many times the size of the UK). It would depend where you are going to get stationed I would think!

Are you training for Brisbane or rural QLD police ? If Brisbane then there are simply lots of areas to choose from and I should imagine your ultimate decision will be where you are going to work. There is no point for example, living in Bayside Brisbane if you work in Samford.

Can you narrow the region down a bit so people can make suggestions ?

rEDLAND BAY, VICTORIA AND WELLINGTON POINT, CLEVELAND. 1 Hours drive or train to sbisbane, an hour from your sister aand lovely little towns with all you need , especially cleveland. You are by the coast but the beaches are more like red rock mudflats when tide is out. Great places just west of brissie.

We wanted perfect beach(for us anyway) so we chose mooloolaba. It has maroochydore 1 mile away with riverside shopping centre and a beautiful parade of riverside cafes and a medium size shopping centre, about a third of the trafford or lakeside or the gables shopping centres but enough for a good days shopping. It also has a pig n whistle there that shows the premiership til 4ish in the morn should you wish. In mooloolaba there is an irish bar and loads of great restaurants

If you want an in depth look at my reccie trip in nov then look here

http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...54#post2984054

I posted as i went along.

Try realstate.com.au , you can set a price range, no of beds etc.

Good luck, and try and see if there are police or nurse housing as my brotheri s tranferring to the ozzie army and they have defence housing for the soldiers that you can buy. So look into it, you never know, as the ozzie gov looks like it thinks of a lot of fresh ideas on the surface. I found the gov building alot more real an you can get things done that day by speaking to people and not filling in forms and waiting and waiting like the u.k.

good luck

As things stand I cannot apply for the Queensland police until we've
received our permanent residency.
I'm led to believe that they are fairly flexible as to where you will be
based if you are a lateral entrant, so at the moment we can give
consideration to virtually anywhere in the state.
We are just trying to build up as much info. as we can on different areas
We intend to check out Cairns when we come over in January and due
to some info. just given I think we're also going to add Townsville to
the itinerary.
Up to now I seem to like the look of the Sunshine Coast, seems that you get
more house for your money than on the Gold Coast and appears less built
up.
Again, this is just info. I've got from the internet.

Hi Steve...the sunshine coast works well for us. When we got here, we travelled around for a few months, we loved the north coast and went as far as Cape Trib...only problem up north is...if you have kids that love the sea and the beach you are very limited when it is safe to go in the sea. What with the stingers and the crocs and the extreme weather conditions we settled on the sunshine coast...as for the police. I am an ex west mids cop, havnt bothered joining over here, but i believe you have to go to training school in Brisbane for 12 weeks no matter how many years you have in the job.(thats if you want to live around brisbane)That maybe a consideration if you are thinking of where to settle..you partner will be unindated with work!
Hope this helps..Maggie

Hi, just read some comments on another site regarding Townsville being a
garrison town and questioning the quality of the beaches, amongst other
stuff
Of course different people different ideas.
Do you think it's a good place to be with the family then.(obviously you do,
or you wouldn't be going )

Steve.

Thanks Maggie

Am I right in thinking that the Sunshine Coast is a lot quieter than the Gold
Coast and that house prices are less ?

Steve...got to admit, havnt been in the hinterland of the Gold Coast, but have done the main drag...where all the bright lights are...yes, bit quieter on the sunshine coast, hence the prices. The further North you go the more you get for your money. But depends what sort of amenities you want close by(within 1/2 an hour drive)...the sunshine coasts suits us..the sea is safe all year round (ignoring the sharks of course)and with 3 kids it is ideal for us.

I think Townsville is an amazing place to raise a family and most people who say negative things about it either haven't been there at all or for many years If you do a search on Townsville on this forum you should find some posts by Rabc and Jimtrish who both moved there last year and they sum the place up very well (they love it) Of course it depends what you are looking for and you really need to take a look for yourselves. I promise you won't be disappointed by the Strand (the beach front promenade) as it's absolutely gorgeous with views over the Coral Sea towards Magnetic Island.

As for being a garrison town, my ex husband was in the forces and trust me Townsville is NOTHING like some of the places we were posted to

No doubt everywhere we look at could receive good and bad reviews,
nowheres perfect as they say. However, I still intend to check the place
out as certainly from what I've seen the pro's seem to outweigh the cons's
No matter where we end up, I don't want to go with rose tinted specs,
which is where sites like this are invaluable for presenting both sides of the
coin.
