hi can anyone tell me whats its like living around blackburn area, or scorsby somewhere near the forests. or where can you recomend thats near to woods

Try looking at The Dandenong Ranges (Not Dandenong itself which is industrial apparently).
The Dandenong ranges look beautiful. Posters Bordy and The crow both live that way and would probably help if you pm'd them :)

my ideal location would be Glen Waverley, 45 mins from city, quiet, and truly a multicultural suburb.

Not really nearer the forests or woods though... and closer than 45 mins I would think. I would say it was pretty busy rather than quiet. Mags3 is renting there, so could expand further.

If you want to live really close or in the forest, I would look at:

The Basin
Ferntree Gully
Upper Ferntree Gully
Upwey
Tecoma
Belgrave

All with 40 min to 1 hr of city out of rush hour - but same difference by train (all but Basin have train stations - Boronia is the closest to The Basin - 5 min drive).

If you aren't worried about the distance from CBD, you could check out villages in the Ranges:

Sassafras
Olinda
Monbulk
The Patch
Kallista

The other side of the Ranges, north of The Basin are Montrose and Mount Evelyn - about 36km out of the city, but good house prices and some big blocks.

Blackburn or Box Hill is where we headed first. Mainly cos my sister lives near there. We'll have to rent for at least 6 months and hope to buy further out, possibly Bayswater/Scoresby (because everything nearer the CBD is way out of our price range).

We're hoping to go in June so have tried to narrow it down as I'd like to look at schools, etc.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi there

Your initial location will give you a good chance to look around the more affordable suburbs and find somewhere that feels right for you. Scoresby is quite built up and industrial in places - Wantirna may be better (mostly newish housing and estates - no rail link though). Bayswater is a mixed bag - I hear Bayswater North is nicer (the main street and station areas can feel a bit rough, to me anyway!).

Might be worth looking a bit further out - Kilsyth, parts of Boronia are nice and The Basin, of course! Also check out Montrose.

Also look at Ringwood North and maybe even North Croydon.

Glen Waverley is a huge, busy suburb, personally i dont like it due to this, it has an 'old , retired' white, population and a young trendy asian population.

It is a great location for travelling anywhere, easy to get to mornington, etc and easy to get to the city, trainline is great and the last train from the city is about 1 am.

Schools are excellent, glen waverley state school, is performing very high and is difficult to get into, you must be in the zone, however it has over 2,000 pupils, who start and stop at different times and also have their breaks at different times, coz they all cant fit it the school grounds at the same time:)

Honestly IG I would not move so close to people you know.

I don't mean that in a nasty or judgemental way. In reality you need to make your own friends and your own way in life. Whether your sister is in Glen Waverley, Blackburn or Berwick thats close enough to keep in contact without living out of their lives and their friends. Hope that makes some form of sense.

Not sure of your budget but I would make full use of the continued downturn - allow another 6 months before things really kick in.
- Land not the building is the value of property
- If you can't get too work without a car, its the wrong area too buy. By this I dont mean discount daily commute by car, but if something happens and you can't get to work you don't get paid hint! hint!.
- When you come over dont forget to PM us locals for a cuppa and catchup:)

Sorry but I have to disagree.

It is very important to have some kind of support network when you first get here, be that friends, relatives or even BE.

We lived with one of my Sisters for 4 months after we got here and that helped us to get on our feet pretty quickly. She introduced us to all of Her friends and with the exception of one couple we don't have any contact with any of them. But it really did help us get to know how things went on here, sport, jobs, customs etc.

I couldn't think of anything worse than just turning up at the airport not knowing a thing about the place. you can do all the research you want but until you live here you don't what it is like.

I know everybody is different but it worked for us. I probably only see my Sister every couple of weeks despite Her living 15 minutes away.

Thanks for all your comments. I have taken bits of advice from all of them. You have no idea how good it is to be in contact with people who actually live where I'm headed.

My sister has been trying to get us out there for the past 10 years so I know she's giving me the SUPER-OPTIMISTIC side to everything I ask.

Hoping to get over by June/July. I know its your winter - but it'll be the equivalent to an Irish Summer :lol: (Serious)
