The same gloom and doom forecast was mooted when Mitsubishi closed some years ago, but the southern suburbs prospered despite this.

Workers at GMH at Elizabeth have had years of warning, so many workers have already been looking elsewhere, or have retired. I'm sure that other employers will be attracted to the area, though for a while finances will probably be tight resulting from a knock on effect.

We can also consider that DSTO (formerly Weapons Research Establishment where I worked) also died a slow death, yet Salisbury and Playford didn't fall apart. In fact both council areas have grown.

I am in exactly the same position as you. Also a teach in UK of 9 years. Husband to be is self employed plumber / property renovation. Have a 13year old daughter with us too. So much to think of and not sure where to start but want to make it happen.

Just two weeks ago today we arrived in Adelaide after emigrating from Edinburgh, Scotland. Our logic for Adelaide was quite similar to yours, but we had been to Oz several times previously and kind of knew that if Adelaide wasn't for us within the first few weeks we'd just head up to Brisbane as we know it well...

So far we are absolutely delighted with Adelaide; it's clean, very laid back, enough shopping for some weekend consumerism, traffic seems to flow, and the beaches are beautiful! Whilst the city centre might not be huge (reminds me a bit of Liverpool size-wise), most suburbs have the shopping potential of a small British town, so everything seems to be available. Today we went to the Botanic Gardens - easily the equal of Edinburgh's - then down to Norwood for a spot of retail therapy; lovely shops & restaurants, people enjoying the sunshine, all with no hassle. It was a pleasant 22C today - although we had a 40C heatwave midweek!- but the humidity is low here, so it actually feels cooler than you expect it to.

We're renting in the CBD for the first month and after ten days of hard searching have just found a twelve month rental in a place called Semaphore, where with beach views and city access within 20 minutes we think we'll be very happy. Furnished places seemed very hard to come by, and money talks unfortunately; we had to offer six months advance rental and have impeccable references because we were in competition for the house - but this is probably a bit unusual.

We're in our fifties and have retired, so can't comment on work opportunities, but I can say that Australia feels 'expensive' at the current exchange rate - this is the only downside for us; if you are paid locally this won't be an issue though - but we'd suggest having a decent lump sum of cash to get you through the early days.

All in all, Adelaide should be enough of a City for anyone if you don't want or need the adrenaline rush of the 'London's and Sydneys' of the World. Whilst no doubt we'll find some downsides, we're currently loving it here.
