Default where do you stay when you first arrived?

Hi, just wondered if anyone could give any tips or advice on what you did when you first arrived re accommodation.

Did you sort out rental beforehand from the uk? is that possible? Did you stay in a hotel first for a few nights to enable to you to find somewhere and if so how long did/does it take? Of rent a fully furnisedh "holiday let".

Just wondered the best plan of action.

Experiences and advise much appreciated.

thanks

The interim accomodation market has far more availability than we arrived. Hotel for first week, then short term accomodation for next few weeks until a longer term rental was found.

Some peope will claim to find a rental in 2 days other 6 weeks. Best plan for 6 weeks as there are more people on that end of time spectrum.

If you state your city of destination the good peps of BE will make recommendations.

We arranged to rent a furnished apartment through a real estate agency. We arranged it from the UK - telephone calls and emails.

You could always look on Gumtree, which is getting as big in Sydney as it is in London. There is plenty of temporary accommodation and people who will help you get adjusted! I found one flat share and the owner actually helped with my job (they did get a small referral fee but the job has suited me perfectly!), including bank account, tfn and superannuation, and also general Aussie nuances - like alcohol/gambling licensing laws!

We are thinking about a camper van and having a tour round trying to locate an area to live in.

I agree that the Perth Gumtree site is a good place to start - check out the 'short term' section for fully furnished/holiday accommodation:

Perth Gumtree

Good luck finding something suitable!

We stayed in a holiday cottage for a couple of weeks which is great because its cheaper than hotels etc and everything you need is there for you. That gave us time to sort out a rental.

We stayed in Nissen huts in an immigration camp in Melbourne for a few months.... mind you I was only three years old and had travelled to Aus with my parents in 1968 on the Castel Felici ten quid immigrant ship!
Not sure if the huts are still there though...

Holiday house. We were there for 2 weeks and managed to secure a rental house in that time.

Do you get the option with long term rentals to have furnished or unfurnished, like you do in the UK? I guess with a short term holiday rental you will have everything to hand straight away.

Thinking at the mo, may ship before arrival and do holiday let for about 6 weeks and hope it shows up in time before renting long term! Anyone got any thoughts on that idea or have done it?

Thanks for all your replies, been really helpful

No. All long term rentals seem to be unfurnished.
