...............how much does it cost or is it free?

Here in the UK our local refuse transfer station is free for all domestic use, whereas in New Zealand where my outlaws live they pay per dump (if you will excuse the expression).

Is it free in Oz, or does user pay? Also what kind of things will the council take away in addition to normal rubbish?

Depends where you live - different councils have different arrangements. For example, where I am, (Randwick council, in Sydney) there are two 'council cleanups' a year. This is where you put your unwanted stuff out near the road/footpath and a truck comes by and picks it all up (this is after all the scrap merchants, second-hand dealers and neighbours etc. have cruised by and taken what they want). We also get two free ad-hoc calls a year, when you can phone them for a one-off pick-up.

We also have fortnightly pickups for green waste and recycling.

You can pay for additional pick-ups but the above is free (or rather included in the rates).
