Yes, British expats who have set up in business in Australia, from plumbers to hairdressers to accountants and carpet cleaners.
The greeks do it, the italians do it ,the Yugos do it....keep the business in their communities
I am an Australian citizen from the Uk so that counts . !

Likewise, I dont think it would occur to me what nationality they were, as long as they were qualified & available to help....

I supsect melbournehelp is proposing a business venture "British Expat Tradesmen" or something. Me, I'd be much more interested in skills and price than nationality.

Don't live in Melb. but I guess the survey still stands.....

Doesn't matter about nationality, I always ask my friends for recommendations.

Well Im a builder, most important to me in order.

All the correct papers licences etc, without this I am in big shite.

Experience, experience, experience.

Knowledge inside out and backwards of laws and regualtions which change weekly here.

Race and age in my company do not matter, yesterday I employed a 50 year old chippie, because I feel he may be supervisor material, hes a Kiwi. We also employ an aborigiinal kid who is one of the most likeable and hardworking persons I've had the pleasure in employing.

But no way have I ever employed anyone because of their race alone. I dont actually employ any brits at the moment but only because most dont know enough about our complicated construction laws till they have been here a few years.

I'm not in Melbourne either but, owning an old house, I've used quite a lot of tradesmen. My priorities are quality of work, price, reliability, availability. The best person for the job gets the job - doesn't matter whether they come from Tilbury or Timbuktu.

I'd prefer as with anywhere to use someone who came on personal recommendation, and preferably someone whose previous work I could see.

I can see that this approach might well go against the recently arrived.

The purpose of the poll is to see whether there is an opportunity to help expats in business ,here in Melbourne.
It's not a race issue , it's about seeing if a free directory(to users) would be of use and be used by people who need tradespeople .

Going by the standard & quality of the tradesmen that I have used in the UK (sure, there are exceptions), I'd go for the Aussies. Generally in the UK now, trade standards are crap.
