Air Asia flies from KL to Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast airport is 100km from Brisbane - you can then take this bus which is specifically timed to meet up with the Air Asia flights:

Costs $38 o/w and when I took it only took about an hour into the Brisbane transit centre.

Alternatively check out Malaysia Airlines as they do some very good fares between KL and BNE, to try and compete with Air Asia I guess.

I don't think you'll have to worry about the cost of IFE as I don't think the plane operating the flight will have it!

I recently saw this AirAsia IFE Link which seems to imply that the flight to Perth should have built in IFE and if they are using old aircraft for the other legs then they have portable media players available. Cost looks around £10 each so still looking cheap for me.

Since that equates to £275 per person which cannot be right.

Nope definitely £1100 for 4 tickets not £1100 each, that includes luggage (25KG each), meal, and even the £5 comfy kit (Blanket, eye mask, head pillow), 4 people total price £1100!

I understand that we will have to collect case in Kuala Lumpur and then check in ourselves to the Perth flight, but we arrive at 2:30 pm and fly back out at 11:30pm so plenty of time to kill, which should also give us plenty of flexibility for late arrival.

I'm not saying that this isn't going to be a hassle or stress free, especially with 2 kids (6 & 4!), but as I said it's a bargain price and for me to good a price to turn my nose up at. However speak to me on the 23rd March and I'll probably be telling a different story i.e. steer clear, don't touch with a barge pole.

I'm kinda of looking at it along the lines of if someone said to me would you spend the next 24 hours in specific degree of discomfort for a return of £600 to £1000 tax free would you do it, then the answer would be yes. So I'm taking the risk (this time anyway).

Oh what have I done

Yes, but will they have enough to go around? On my flight from KL to Gold Coast there wasn't even a single beer loaded! They have no idea how much revenue they must've lost clearly!

Just to prepare you....there is NOTHING to do at the low cost terminal. There is also very little seating, the vast majority of it is outdoors in the heat & humidity. The low cost terminal also has no link to the main KLIA airport, which is a world class facility.

At the LCCT, there is a McDonalds, tiny KFC hole in the wall outlet, one other cafe and a shop.

Seeing as you've saved so much on your flights and you have 9 hours to kill I'd really suggest you try out the Plaza Premium lounge which is a pay per use lounge which claims to have facilities at the LCCT, although I couldn't find them when I looked.

For RM148 (about GBP30) each you can spend the 8 hours in the lounge. They'll look after your luggage, feed you, shower you, massage you, get you drunk (Heineken on tap :D)....and you can always pop out if the kids want MacD's!

Great option I reckon! :D

Thanks for the tip, I was considering booking a night in the Concorde Inn and just staying for the afternoon / evening at RM200, but didn't realise that there was no link between LCCT & the main airport. But the Plazza lounge looks like a good alternative.

Cheers

You could take a cab over there (its about a 20km drive around the airport perimeter).....or I think there's probably is a coach link which would literally cost peanuts. The cabs are small and you may find you need 2 if you have 4 x 25kg large bags.

It's a pity that the hotel hasn't opened at the LCCT yet as that would be ideal. I wouldn't rule out the hotel idea though as getting some sleep is probably a good idea.

Re: When to book flights

My partner and I went shopping for flights (Sept/Oct last year when he got his visa) and we were told we were looking at around £900 each. That was almost enough to make me stay put!

However, I am on more mailing lists than you can poke a stick at & in November last year I got an email from flightcentre with a one day sale. I rang up and booked our flights (return) to Adelaide for a princely £594 each, flying QANTAS. We had to leave the UK between some dates in April & May - so we knew we had plenty of time to give notice at work and sort ourselves out etc etc.

I had an email through late last week of a five day flightcentre sale which was offering Cathay Pacific flights (via Hong Kong) very cheaply and I think that was for May/June departures.

My advice would be to sign up for every mailing list you can and be prepared & ready to take advantage of any good deals that come along!
