When to apply for a job?
 

My wife and I are in the final stages of getting our migration visa application approved (just completed the medical), and going to Brisbane in September 2011 to look round the areas to get a feel for the place as this is our preferred location.

Can anybody advise when is the best time to start applying for jobs, is it when we final move there or once we have received our formal visa approval?

My husband started applying once our visa's were approved and he knew he could move within a matter of weeks as most employers don't want to hang around for ages. It did take a few months of applying but we got there in the end.

If you are in medical professions or highly specialised and in demand then you can start looking around in advance, but by in demand I don't mean in an occupation on the SOL

For most people there is little point doing anything until you are ready to move and can show you are ready and committed. A few weeks before you go try lining up some appointments for your arrival, don't do it any sooner than that or you will only have to remind them about you again nearer the time.

I'm guessing from your name that you are a Building Services Engineer?

I am indeed a Mechanically biased Building Services Engineer and looking for permanent work around Brisbane, as stated we are visiting Brisbane in September and would like to arrange as many meetings with recruitment companies and Building Services Companies as possible as we will be looking to relocate as quickly as possible after the September visit.

Therefore if anybody can help on this please advise by return as we would like to have a productive visit in September 2011.
