Default Whats the student visa?

Keep reading people who cant get into aus are now going for the student visa? but most are families

Does the visa have conditions/ do they have to pay for the education? Support themselves while studying?

Yes, the student visa has restrictions and conditions and overseas fees do apply. Information is at http://www.immi.gov.au

Getting permanent residence is not guaranteed at the end (despite the myth that an Australian qualification is a ticket to PR) so there is a risk of a one-way trip home. This risk can be managed by careful course selection but not reduced to zero, or anywhere close.

Quickly looked at the link, so maybe I missed the answer?

The main question is if a person arrives on a student visa with a family in tow who is supporting them? they can only work between terms so what do they live on? Are they elilgible to claim family benefits etc, does the partner work or does the family live on their savings for two years.

No welfare benefits.

Most students (and family members) can work 20 hours per week during terms, and full time outside term, but it's unusual for students to find anything other than casual, unskilled work.

Other than that, I suspect the plan is usually to live on savings and hope that PR comes before the money runs out.

Any similar systems for aussie/poms (we all have both citizenships) who might fancy a spell in the USA, read of a builder whos sold up here and is going to study in Hawaii, wonder now if its a similar thing?

The US is not easy to migrate to unless you get in on an employment or business visa (and even then getting the green card is difficult), or have a close relative who is a US citizen.

Where were you and your wife born? If you were born in Australia and not Great Britain (or another ineligible territory) you can try for the US Diversity Visa lottery next time it comes up, probably in November. http://travel.state.gov has details.

Otherwise if you qualify to migrate, Canada may be an option. Alternatively, use your Aussie passports to get PR in New Zealand.

Wife born UK me Australia, my younger brothers been doing the USA visa lottery for years no luck yet tho. Well aware how difficult it is to get into USA, student visa was a wild card really.

New Zealand is a beaut country for a holiday, to live? not for us no way.

Canada might be OK for student visa cant imagine life for a builder there would be too easy tho, all that snow i'd be out of work half the year.

Bali could be good lots of aussies getting life visas there lately

You can enter the lottery - if you got a Green Card your wife (and children) would obtain one too.

Your wife is ineligible to enter in her own right unless on the off chance she was born in Northern Ireland (incidentally the reason the UK is ineligible is because more than 50,000 British born people get green cards through other routes over 5 years).

The lottery is a long shot. Ask further on a US forum.

A British friend of mine did postgraduate music in Boston. He stayed on and worked legally for a couple of years in LA. I am unsure if there was a route to a green card that way.
