If anyone comes to Australia for cuisine, culture, city life they will be mightily disappointed. The wildlife, coast and outback are great but you need months to drive around and experience it - a couple of weeks holiday will just be hideously expensive trying to pack in the tourist ticks.
Any marine enthusiast or sailor will love Oz for a holiday - around the Whitsundays and reef around whale season. Ningaloo reef is also fantastic but Exmouth is bloody remote and there's nowt else there. FNQ for a few months a year is worth it - but visit from Sep through to April and you'll be sweating like a paedo in a clown suit. Whether it is better than Egypt, the Maldives, Fiji etc for a diving holiday then probably not - the coral isn't as healthy here. Yet, chuck in the humpbacks, minke whales etc and spend a much longer period to drive the coast then may be.

Have to agree with all the comments about South Island NZ, that's a great road trip and can be done in 3 weeks comfortably. Simply stunning, Marlborough Sounds, Kaikora, Otago (best Pinot Noir) Queenstown, Milford Sounds, Hast Pass, West Coast, Mt Cook, Fox Glasier, Abel Tasman National Park. Scenery changing constantly and great people.

It would take some of the best Urban Environments in the world to beat what we've got around here.

So 1 vote for the Melbourne Urban Factor from me... Tourists maybe not but residents then probably yes.

.
You have to be joking. Sydney Road one of the best urban environments...

I found it lacked the vibe that I was anticipating but accept it is pretty good for Oz if one is looking for inner city diversity.

But do you seriously feel it offers more than similar areas in London or Paris or Berlin?
Only know it as a tourist as have never spent longer than ten days there, but it was certainly the impression i had.

New York has to be the top city in the world I reckon. Hong Kong is fun, bonkers and exciting but the Big Apple wins. Aus cities really don't have it.

No it doesn't even come close, Melbourne is an ok place to live but to travel 1000ks to holiday no way.

They certainly don't. Those of us whom enjoy the city vibe thingy will no doubt feel rather deprived in Australia.

Although as least Melbourne has a bit more than a passing resembilance to what city living can be.

New York and then probably London. Never been to Honkers. Found Paris better than London by far for very late night cafe/bar type places with the possibility of encountering some bizarre folk(in a good way, usually)

London is a great city, but it's late night scene is pretty shite. HK is fantastic. We were there a few week ago and had a great time

London sucked ass on Sunday morning when I was taking some friends into town after a night out. Most shops don't open till 11.30/12 and there were maybe two cafes open along the whole of Oxford Street, both rammed with tourists who had made an early start, made their way to Oxford St and then realised there's ***** all to do until midday. For one of the biggest shopping street in Europe it's in a disgraceful state and when it rains there are lakes against every curb, making the whole thing worse. I shall not miss it...

Glad people need licences to kill animals (though i am sure lots of people do it without one) Culling should only ever be done humanely and I really fail to see how anyone could take against a kangaroo :-(
