It then took another 9 weeks until we got the grant letter.
Does anybody know why some files are passed to the decision maker, and others aren't?

It also stated that we hadn't been granted a visa and not to sell the house, give up the job etc.
Maybe it means something different if you are already in Australia, or a pre-grant is a pre-grant and you could still be refused a visa even if you are just sending your passport in?
I know we had to fill in a form if there were any changes to our circumstances since our application had been lodged and this would be taken into account when the final decision was made.
Official grant letter took about 4 weeks to come after we returned from Singapore. This stated that our application had been successful and gives the date the visa was granted.
Be interesting to see what other people received in their letter.
Boomie, did your letter say that you had been granted a visa and there was no mention of selling your house or giving up your job?

Our letter was a grant letter that said we had been granted and to post the passports off to London for the stickers.

Same as us. Our pre-grant letter said that it was likely our application would be successful and we had to leave the country whilst a decision was made (this was because we were in Australia at the time).
It also stated that we hadn't been granted a visa and not to sell the house, give up the job etc.
