How bad weather brought a city to its knees

Trains and trams were stopped in their tracks, roads were cut, motorists rescued and traffic jammed after a month's worth of rain fell in an hour yesterday morning.
Glenferrie Road, in Hawthorn, was the hardest hit, with floodwater and a suspected broken water mains damaging the asphalt, closing the road between Riversdale and Burwood Roads from 1.15am to mid-morning, following Thursday evening's downpour.
Outbound on the Monash Freeway at Forster Road, a truck rolled over, closing lanes for eight hours until 9am. Roads in low-lying areas of Elwood, St Kilda and Albert Park became lakes, with Marine Parade cut at St Kilda from 7.30am until 10am, banking up traffic for kilometres.
Across Melbourne 66 sets of lights were knocked out, and another 45 were on flashing amber. The lights failed at King and Flinders Street, creating a blockage back to South Melbourne. "It was an unmitigated disaster for traffic," VicRoads control centre manager Keith Weegberg said.
