You said Daewoo, but I thought Daewoo has closed down and the spare parts will only be guaranted for 10 years when it GM Daewoo closed down in 2004. That means in 2004 you can only get second hand spare parts from other people owning Daewoo car.
Or I could be wrong. How easy to maintain Daewoo car in Australia?

As for cheapest - any of the Korean brands. Hyundai, Daewoo, that sort of thing.

Generally Jap cars are the best, if money was no object I'd get a Diesel Toyota Landcruiser (yes, I WOULD take it off road! plenty of great 4x4 family adventures to be had here in WA).
Holdens and Fords are all pretty average. The Korean cars are cheap but I think they are only designed to last 8 to 10 years - planned obsolescence they call it, maybe not planned but they are "cheap".

Subaru's are definitely worthy of a mention for reliability and for being 4-wheel drive. However, this means they hold their value in the used market.

These cars seem to last forever. Depends on what you want tho, some people like small nippy cars and many want a recent model (in which case you can rule the valiants out).
The larger cars are so much more comfortable for any long distance driving but I guess some of the 4x4's would be too.

I'm not sure I would want to buy a Mitsubishi with their current financial woes either My boyfriend's parents have had a Mitsubishi Magna for over 10 years and it has been alot more reliable than their 5 year old Ford Laser.
They are just keeping their fingers crossed that the SA government continues to prop Mitsubishi up

Yes Magnas are as cheap as chips as they haven't quite shrugged off the bad early days even though the cars have improved dramatically. If you have a low budget I would go for this one.
We have owned a Subaru Forester, Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon. Love the Subaru and Commodore but hated the Falcon as it kept breaking down. Never want to buy a Ford again.

This is true. We were hit from behind at traffic lights in our hire car on the Gold Coast by a driver with 3rd party only on rego. Luckily he paid our insurance excess of $1100 as he was a decent guy but the hire companies insurance company will still pursue him for the remainder of the $5000 of damage he caused. An expensive lapse of concentration and a lot more expensive than having proper insurance in place although perfectly legal here.
