From Tim Sorrels page

Mike.

On arrival - essential firsts!:
Get rental/loan car,

PO Box (if you are planning on having one, get it early on so you don’t have to use your temporary accommodation as an address)

Arrange long term house rental / purchase,

Register at Tax office for Tax file numbers,

Register with Medicare,

Register with Centrelink for family allowance,

Bank account – you may already have deposit account set up from UK, but savings & cheque account probably wanted. No need to go to central city branch

select Doctor/Medical Centre (you don't have to register until you use them. You can ask UK doctor for your computer printout of your records)

get Mobile phone - Vodaphone possible with $200 deposit, Telstra - no way. You can bring a UK digital phone and use an Australian SIM

Buy the drivers handbook and start learning!

Take written driving test within 3 months of being permanently resident (Practical driving test is no longer required for license holders from UK & elsewhere)

Suncream, in the summer, drink, drink and more drink.

Insulated Waterbottle & lunchboxes for children

Lottery Winners Circle card - call 131 868 to get one. Costs a few $ but they notifiy you if you win and also stores your numbers on the card, meaning to don’t have to fill out the form each week.

“Supersaver card from garage for cheap calls to UK (5.9c per min)

Telephone account for cheap calls - recommend World Exchange

Flyby card from Kmart,Coles or Myer - register straight away so you clock up points straight away. Use the temporary card provided until plastic card arrives.

Note that Kmart sometimes have a storewide sale - 15% off all prices - absolutely everything, about 4 times a year. Watch out for it. Sometimes certain sections may have 20% or 25% off, - even 50% off say on children's clothing.

Playgroup - there's bound to be one or more in your suburb - ask around

Queensland Ambulance Cover $90 for whole family per year. Call 1 300 369 003. If you get private family medical cover, it could include ambulance cover… but medical cover could involve medicals and in the meantime you should have ambulance cover because a trip in an Ambulance following a 000 call could cost you $1500.

Insect Repellant - particulary when it's warm. Put it on before 4pm - they seem to like to get you about tea time ! (we don’t usually bother with this)

Shut screen doors as it gets dark

Weeds - get control of them straight away ! For sizeable property, Hozelink pump spray, with weedkiller. Don't wait - you'll have a much larger job later!

Tim Sorrell used to post on here - his web site is good, obviously having too much fun?

Anyway check out mobile phone deals - UK mobile phones can be bought over and just buy a local sim Communic8.com.au are not bad, pay as you go deal no deposit 24hrs max to get going. Also for those longer conversations buy an interational phone call card, eg apple - lets you phone home for less that 5c a minute. Much Much cheaper than mobiles, not good for recieing calls though!

Other than that bit to add to Tims advice.......take big breath and enjoy. There are lots of things to do but you can also take time to enjoy the differences. Maybe the ladies will understand but all those fresh feelings go so quickly like your wedding day, it is hard to look back and remember all of it. I write a diary - not day by day, just when I remember or want to write down an important bit....very interesting for the kids for later maybe?

Cheers
