Default What is your experience with Aussie jobs?

Did any of you go through a couple of jobs when initially settling in Australia before finding the right one? My husband and I have jobs which are the same as what we did in Northern Ireland but it's not the same (obviously you may say but it is hard to articulate)? Is this normal?

You will always find that things are done differently whenever you move jobs, be it here or in the UK but of course now you have some cultural differences to assimilate also.
It can take time to adjust. You are getting Aussie experience & if you have the opportunity to move, then why not?
Good luck

Some people report they did get into a first funny one. Which almost certainly relates to it being the first...if they are all bad - it might just mean that Australian life does not translate well at your level and in your area of expertise..(apart from some jobs requiring retraining and quals) and this is a huge issue and is generally not discussed on this forum.

It's an issue if it means a lot of experiences then are unhappy ones...

I worked long term temp roles or short term contracts for a few years so I could find something I really liked. Unfortunately sometimes I found jobs I loved but ended up not being able to stay in them beause they were only leave covers or temp jobs. After 3 years I found a permanent job I really like though.

It's perfectly normal to find it different here job wise. Like someone else said, if you're not happy then look for something else. I've found Australians are very transient in their outlook to employment and some people have dozens of jobs on their resumes.

I'm still in my first job here 3.5 years later - longer than I have ever been in the same role in my life.

This is through choice as the role suits my life at the moment.

I really, really agree with this - many we know have over 20 jobs in about 15 yrs and think it's ok ... with my old recruitment hat on I'd try and spin it into being adaptable but seriously

There's nothing worse than being in a job you hate, it makes for an unhappy home so bear that in mind - having said that, as others said - it's a different country and same jobs do mean different things so it might be just a case of giving it time!

Good luck

And they are not in the UK?

That's the way it is and I like it. You get no loyalty from employers, therefore no loyalty from their workers.

Arrrhh - I see where you're going wrong .... you're in the wrong state!

South Australia is a recycle plastic bags only state, ie we all use and re-use green canvas ones for our food shopping

Stayed in my first Aussie IT job for 4 years and quit the second after 1 year.

Currently resting, giving serious consideration to dedicating my life spreading the word of Our Lord And Saviour, Jesus Christ.

As I was heading of for my first full time job back in 1970, My Father gave me the exact same advice. It was probably the best advice he has given me. It's definitely the one thats stayed true and constant.

On a side note Amazulu, despite our vast political differences I'm amazed how similarly we view the world at times. Those comments re Xenophobia were really good.

Great minds think alike.

I'm surprised too. I have a right-wing viewpoint on most things - hard-right in some areas. I have no time for modern day unions and you're a unionist.....

Just goes to show that people from different viewpoints can get along.
