what are you hopes for life in Australia?

Each and every person has their own reasons for wanting to move to Australia. What are those reasons? do you want to escape the weather/ cramped housing/ Government / quality of life for you and/or your kids etc etc...

We are going because I'm Australian, and 5+ years in the UK is enough for me.. and my British Hubby is quite happy to go Australia to live.

fire away.. ... and let's not degrade the thread with a slanging match! Please! I'm not keen on Oz/UK which is best country in the world type thing.. more what you are hoping for the future...

and I wish everyone the best and that you fulfill your dreams.

Re: what are you hopes for life in Australia?

Our first reason for looking into moving elsewhere in the world is that we dont like what's happening in the UK.

We picked Oz as hubby has been before and I've always fancied living there.

I guess we hope to have a slightly more relaxed lifestyle and more time to enjoy outdoor activities, rather than being cooped up in the house for 6 months of the year.

Also we are hoping to start a family when we get to Oz and I just feel having looked into it Oz would be a much better place for our kids to grow up.

couldn't agree more with you about a more relaxed lifestyle.. and not being cooped up for months on end!! And a nice place to raise kids.. we don't have any kids, but if/when we decide to start a family, Australia is where I want have/raise them.

I am looking forward to wandering around barefeet (my much preferred state!!) and not getting very peculiar looks from people!!

we picked oz because my wifes mother lives there with her stepfather and half brother....after visiting the gold coast to see them in 2003 with our baby boy we deceided it was the best place to bring our boy up ...... quality of life, sports actually encouraged in schools no kids hanging around street corners no kids getting stabbed in school ....i think we all get the jist the british government should be ashamed of the state of this country
oh yeah and being sir les ...the beer is much cheaper lol

barefoot is fine in a sunny paradise :) :) :)

We are off to Oz for the warmtha and a more relaxed life for our daughter. Don't know if we will be more relaxed, but will be warmer in Queensland :D

More space, lots of interesting but annoyingly nocturnal wildlife (apart from the birds), friendly people, more laid-back attitude, a house I can afford....
plus other things too numerous to mention... :)

So many reasons for going actually hinge on the weather. It sounds like quite a shallow and inane reason to go half way round the world but it's true.

I don't hardly ever see my neighbours unless it's a nice evening/weekend because everyone's stuck indoors. Therefore the primary reason for uping sticks is for the improved socialising, sports and leisure opportunities.

Should have added - my concerns are purely work-related.
a) how long will it take me to find work
b) my line of work relies on me being up to date with brands, social/polictial views, etc, thus will I be able to cut it in oz?

Better climate, lifestyle, more affordable housing, more outdoor activities, more space, easier going and (imo) less pretentious people, a whole new country to discover. Hopefully a better environment to bring up my daughter......Im sure there are more- just cant think of them right now :)

I've always wanted to live near the sea. So I'm looking forward to walks on the beach. Also with our money going a bit further house-wise to have an en suite bathroom would be fabulous. Maybe even a walk in wardrobe! I also love the idea of a separate laundry room.

We've had a couple of hours sunshine this morning and it's remarkable how it lifts the spirits of everyone. So that happy, contented feeling I'm after.

Re: what are you hopes for life in Australia?

I too am originally from Brisbane and after 7 years in UK am missing my family and the lifestyle I had over there. (I never went anywhere with shoes on!! :D )
It has become more apparent to me what I miss about Oz since having my son 2 1/2 yrs ago. I never get to take him to the park here or seaside coz it is nearly always too cold and wet.
Partner has always wanted to live abroad anyway but never had the opportunity so is happy to make the move for the sake of all of us.

Exactly the same for us.

Aus has so many things going for it, and I'm too hungover to list them, sorry.

No rose tinted glasses, but things that I consider important like attitude and friendliness are a good start. Whenever I go into a pub in England, I always seem to end up talking to Aussies....says it all.

Re: what are you hopes for life in Australia?

I was born in Adelaide but my paretns moved back here when I was 6 months old.Never been back over there.
Now I am married with 2 wonderful children we want a better life for them. The time just seems right. This country is going down the pan - there just doesn't seem to be anything here for us.
The weather is also a factor and like everyone to live the dream with no regrets.
Also to be able to afford to buy our own house.
For the kids to discover the wildlife instead of only seeing it on the telly.
There's probably lots more but that is all that comes to mind.
Oh yeah one more - to send our noisy neighbours a postcard with " Glad you are not here" on it!!!
Good luck everyone
Lynne :)

I totally agree, my kids love being outside, as do we, but here in the UK if we go to the park all the bits are wet so they get wet bums, then they moan, then they get a cold, then theyre stuck ondoors watching sky, or playstation, or PC. Already dreading half-term next week.

Re: what are you hopes for life in Australia?

Being able to afford a house and start a family! An ordinary enough aspiration that seems to have been put beyond the reach of most first time buyers in England. And if I cant afford to buy here what chance would any of my(future) children have? Not that i'm bitter or anything :D

Re: what are you hopes for life in Australia?

For us it is that we will be improving the quality or our life as a family.

No more 12 hour days for my husband cos he has to commute into London, or Oxford every day. This will mean we can do more as a family as he won't be too tired all the time. The kids won't have to amuse themselves by playing computer games cos it is too cold and wet to go outside to play. I won't have to ferry them everywhere cos we live in a small village in the middle of nowhere and public transport is non existent. No more queueing up for the bathroom cos we only have one between 5 of us (and the teenager spends more time in there than anyone else at the minute!). With the beach hopefully on our doorstep we can go more than once a year, here we live as far from the sea as you can possibly get! As the houses are bigger if the kids want friends over they can use the family room without disturbing all the members of the family.

Also I love that the Perth people are so much more laid back than people over here who seem to live to work rather than work to live and enjoy their leisure time. We all want to chill out more and that is why we want to move.

Oh nearly forgot I also like the idea of having a pool in your backyard and being able to use it more than once a year. :D

Re: what are you hopes for life in Australia?

Hey markeh

I certainly was. Surprise surprise They didn't buy one!!! Do they ever? Is it just a free trip abroad for them?

I would recommend a trip out there. We have been twice and absolutely love it. My sister in law and family have been there for 6 years and now would not want to be anywhere else. They have been back for a visit and that just reinforced it.

We are in the really early stages, hubby just gathering stuff to apply to ACS for skill matching, but are all so eager to go we want it to be now now now! :D
