They were 5-6 times the average income. Something was going to give. It just took another 4 years before it did.

Hi Hevs. If you need to ask the forum if you should rent or buy then you haven't done your due diligence and sums! There are plenty of online calculators to see if it is worth it in your particular case. For me, current interest rates, cost of borrowing, holding costs - rent wins outright EASILY. Especially with house prices flat in Perth since 2007 and no chance of this changing anytime soon with a 50% oversupply in listings and rising!

Here's one calculator ....

But this is our home to live in and we are not over stretched so...
Its only a problem if you are investing or over stretched. We have sold into the market that we have bought into, ie...slow and slowly decreasing/ leveling. When we come to sell in 10 / 15 years time I dont think I'm going to be in neg equity

LOL! As Amazulu pointed out, we are not in Perth. I have also just sold and bought into the same market. Its NOT an investment, its a HOME and we want to stay in this one for at least 10 years. I asked the forum as a bit of fun, because, quite frankly I'm well aware that there is a slow down and I was more interested to hear from renters as we have never rented....
So glad that it was all hypothetical because we have found a perfect property that we can live in, but plenty of room for capital improvement when we feel like it....on an acre...two titles..cant go wrong really

Deck with a hint at the view but doesn't do it justice

Bedroom that obviously needs redecoration but again you get an idea of the view

If you bought it with cash then cool, no probs, if you borrowed then you could very well be in the negative in 10-15 years time if you take interest into account. Like you point out though, you don't really care about the financial side of things and more for the comfort of having your own house so i say congratulations to you and I hope you many happy years in the property.

You wouldn't want to close the curtains on that view.

Lovely

Pools are too much hard work to maintain. Might consider a spa down the track.
