I think I need a new prescription . . . I read it as 'What would you do before you leave the UK?'

I was warned it got cold down there and was thinking oh yeah aussie cold, bit nippy, might need a jumper lol: it really is bloody freezing, , it was foggy or a minus quite a few nights of our first stay which was in winter.

I didnt mind it, I love the cold. Funny place, lots of new roads, all purpose built, lots of rules, BIL was constantly on at everyone about road rules, seemed to have some terror of being picked up. They lived in a quite expensive unit when we first visited, houses were not cheap! for very surban look alike homes. Nice restaurants. City centre weekdays looked very business like of course. They were happy with the education there, which isnt the case with most rels we visit in other states. Still think its a place people live more for a reason than any lifestyle factors. BIL and wife both need to be there for jobs but have grown to like it. Everyone they knew seemed to be in police or immigration.
Thanks . Admittedly it doesn't seem at all like the stereotype of an Australian city. The prospect of winter cold is a bit disconcerting but we can always escape to warmer places at weekends, etc. ...And head for the hills during the summer heat . Canberra seems like a good place to begin for my family at this present stage in our lives. A fairly good standard of education there and at least one excellent university seems to have been confirmed by just about everyone I've spoken to. I do feel uneasy about the over-application of rules - not that I'm a rule breaker, just don't want to feel oppressed. My OH works in immigration with a good specialisation over here so hopefully she can do something similar for the Australian government - though we understand and accept that citizenship requirements might be an impediment. Just about everyone we've met who lives/has lived there had positive things to say. Getting a first taste of the place in April on our validation trip. Hoping there's going to be no nasty surprises

I have a couple of good sized cooling boxes and a mozzie net and a whole lot of other belongings in Cape Town that I'm planning to ship separately. I might as well include the cooling boxes rather than buying again. The mossie net will serve as good additional padding, if for nothing else.

I dont often see good cooling boxes in the UK. People here seem to mostly go for cooling bags, not so good for placing beers in a sea of ice. Cooling bags are good for foodstuffs though - expecially those huge Tescos ones. We used to have a few of them but gave them away to relatives from various warmer climes. Unfortunately I havent seen any more Tescos bags for at least a couple of years which is a shame because they were very good. ..And cheap

Chocolate brown . I found that it was just as good for sleeping by day as it was by night what with flies.

Do you still have much of your Army kit? I reduced it down from the complete kit a few years ago. Now all thats left of it is the bolsak, bush hat, formal cap, web belt, soap box and mozzie net. Oh, and the bush jacket.

Nope chucked it all ages ago. Between moving countries twice, it had to go.

No idea why books are so expensive. Smaller market probably accounts for it.

CD's are dearer because in the UK you can buy a CD from Amazon UK or Play for less than a fiver whereas in Australia the cheapest you'll get a CD is about $17.99 generally speaking - unless of course there is a special offer on. Once you've paid shipping costs on an Amazon UK order to Australia then you may as well have bought the CD's in Australia in the first place. Buy $100 worth of CD's from Amazon UK and you'll probably pay nearly $50 in postage costs.
Slightly off topic but, why buy CD's when you can buy an ipod and download songs wherever in the world you are. Also Spotify is great (and free) music while on your PC. You can even create play lists.
