What's the job? Where do you want to live? It's a big place!

if one earns $70K a year in a sydney suburb (about 0.5-1 hr train ride to CBD), what kind of rental should one pay to be able to support wife + 2 primary school kids in public school?

thanks

But where in Sydney? Rents and house prices vary a fair bit! Where will you be working? How long are you prepared to travel to get to work? etc etc!

Monthly??? about 8.5k, annually about 100k. Depends on what is comfortable to you and where you want to live.

rental for property, like anywhere else, is dependant upon location and transport. You could get a great 4 bed house out west for about 350 per week, but you then have transport and social issues. I reckon for 70k, as long as your tastes are not too expensive you should be able to find a half decent place, try along the south western train line (Padstow to Cronulla areas).

Especially as a new migrant - tends to put the Aussie backes up against you from the start.

From what you've told us I'd anticipate that you could demand somewhere around $250K.

$10M a year would be a good salary to demand. Very good.

I'm considering exploring the possibility of working in Australia for a while and see how it goes when I get there. The company I work for have a number of offices in Australia including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane so I should be able to sort out something with them.

The problem that I can see it that my UK salary as a Senior Software Developer / Team Leader is £30k which equates to approx $65k. This is above average salary for the UK. From this thread and another few threads it seems that people are being offered $100K plus for their jobs (so just under £50k) and this amount is deemed "enough" or "comfortable". So, it seems that what is enough for me in the UK won't be enough in Australia!

Looking on jobserve I can see plenty of jobs that would suit me in the 80k to 100k + range. I was hoping that I could work for a year with my current employer and then make a decision. However, from what I gather, $65k isn't going to get me very far.

Any thoughts or comments?
