I've been to Oz but not spent enough time there to get to grips with all the differents foods. What typical UK things are not available?

Thankfully Oz are not as into pre-cooked meals as here, I have slipped into Mrs Lazy buying Aunty Bessy's yorkies and pancakes, not that I can't cook them just got lazy and embarrassed to say that. I used a lot more fresh meats and veggies there. BBQ's also are more popular so we ate healthy there.

Oz choc, though I am going through a craving period is not as tasty as UK stuff and if you see kids lunch boxes, they are not stuffed with crisps, sausage rolls, choc etc, they are much more healthy.

Most of the stuff is the same, just a different brand or taste. I missed paxo stuffing like mad but then got used to Oz stuff that I now back in Blighty am off paxo.

Tinned mushy peas are crap, mind they are here too!!!

the biggest thing we missed was the good old british banger. the sausages are awful. other than that everything in your cupboard at mo should be able to be replaced.

Yes the sausages were lousy, even a "British" butcher over there couldn't get them as I would like.

It is always the daft things you take for granted in the UK like Vimto, Pickled Onion Monster Munch or Galaxy choc that you miss and will pay outrageous amounts to buy at a English Lolly shop.

Ready prepared fresh veggies (y'know, those ready peeled carrots, broccoli / cauliflower florets / chunky winter veg) in the bag and ready to go.

Decent snags.

my biggest miss as a mum was the washing powder and fabric sotner. over here its persil non bio and white comfort. i must have spent our entire savings on trying different combinations to get the same smell in oz. how sad is that.

There's not much you can't get over here that you are used to at home, and if you are really that desparate then there are a few shops in Sydney and places that sell English foods.

Only things I have found so far that you can't find in the local supermarket are, streaky bacon, jaffa cakes and suet. A lot of the regional type English cheeses like Red Leicester, Cheshire etc aren't available without hunting down a specialist dlei.

Brands are different and the fresh food is much better than the UK. The meat isn't pumped full of water so doesn't halve in size when you cook it. The fruit and veg has to be seen to be believed, no comparison to the UK.

As Merlot said much less pre packaged stuff, people tend to cook fresh stuff.

In general you can walk into your local Coles or Safeway here and get pretty much most things you can get from the UK.

Have to disagree on the sausages though, knowing what goes into english bangers it was nice to get them here with no gristle or floor sweepings in them.

Have a look at the online shopping for http://www.coles.com.au/ and http://www.homeshop.com.au/default.a...ookie%5Ftest=1

will give you an idea what is in the shops and prices. Bear in mind the actual shops have other stuff too.

It's all part of the fun though settling in a new country and trying new things

You can get MAyo and Galaxy chocolate here,

I buy Best foods "Real Mayo" (found in the international section of Supa valu and the normal mayo section of woolworths) it is Helmans mayo.

Dove chocolate which you can buy all over the place is Galaxy.
I cant cook yorkies for love nor money but I Can buy aunt bessies in my local supa valu.

I now make my gravy with OXO cubes and cornflour as the instant stuff here is not great and as Merlot says you cant get paxo but I cant bring my tastebuds round to liking the Aussie equivelent.

But for all the things that are not as good there are so many things that are better.
Seafood,
Meat, Fresh vege's and fruit etc etc.

It doesn't take long for your diet to completely change, Sying that there will always be something you might fancy that you cant get your hands on.

Oh and for the girls out there, not sure if it is the same everywhere but you cant get Always Ultra up here or anything remotely thinner than a nappy.

Hello,

I found suet in Safeways (although I did have to ask one of the girl helpers - the boy helper didn't know what it was). It was in the home cooking section. The brand name is Tandaco and makes lovely dumplings.

Not seen any pasties in the shops yet but I don't mind as the Da Boss makes the best ones anyway.

They do pastry pies in every flavour under the sun though and they are not half bad.

Have stopped eating chocolate cause you can't get Galaxy.......but Kala has just corrected that......Dove here I come.

I have acquired a taste for the local sausages but yeah, they are very different.

Didn't eat much fruit in the UK but am eating more here. Bananas are much better flavour.

Drink a lot more fruit juice rather than coffee or tea. Lots of selection.

Thanks for that, will give it a try, not something I use that often but need it for a few dishes. Did have a look in the baking sections but couldn't spot it. Will try again now I know the brand name. Wasn't that much of a problem our local butcher gets it in but needs a day or two notice.

Crisps a very different here. You can get the bog standard flavours like salt&vinegar. But after that its all poncy kettle chip stuff with jalapeno and chilli, or bbq. I miss the old pickled onion, or worcestshire sauce flavour, or prawn cocktail.

There is crisp variety here, but not the *same* variety.

I'm adapting though I really should stopeating the fat laden things anyway,

Cheers,
JTL
