What time does it get dark in Melbourne
Can someone shed some light (no pun intended) on the times that it gets dark in Melbourne?
Are the changes (if any) throughout the year similar to those in the UK; ie, long nights in the summer and shorter in the winter?
Or is it the other way around ?

Can some one tell me if it will be dark when we land at Melbourne in October at 9ish and what sort of temp can we expect at that time?

Melbourne weather in October is variable - could be anywhere between 13C and 33C. Averages can be misleading.

Yep,
This is because of the latitude of Melbourne from the equator. I believe Melbourne is 37 degrees south which is the same as what Lisbon is north.
This helped me in reconsidering my original view that Melbourne is near antarctica. It no more near the south pole than almost all of europe is near the north pole.
The fact that most of the world's land mass in north of the equator plays tricks on one's mind.

Wrap up warm once the sun goes down, starts getting dark nice and early and the temperature plummets. As far as I can recall it was dark in July well before 6.30 and cold and wet at that time of year, but as with the whole 4 seasons in one day can be lovely or freezing depending on which part of Melbourne you're in at a certain point whilst it's day light
