Default What to take and what to leave!

Just curious really.....

All you people in Nz already a quick couple of questions.

What did you not take with you that you are now regretting?
What is hard to get hold off?
Is it best to take everything or as little as poss?

Can you point us in the direction of any sites to compare household goods/electrical stuff?

Thanks Tori

Hi Tori,
My wife has family (brother) in the area, and none here. She spent a year or so there a long time ago and loved the place. Never been myself, but I'm more than willing to give it a go. Been in Southsea all my life, like it here but reckon there may be more to life!
No plans at present regarding work, we're going under the family category so things are a bit easier. Still need job offers though but the rules aren't quite so tight, we're hopng for a bit of help through family & friends! Also in the family quota lottery but not holding out too much hope.

How about you two? Anything lined up? Make sure you report back once there!

Cheers, Gra...

We sold nearly everything. Only came over with six suitcases and shipped 10
boxes of books and Christmas decs. I really regret that. I wish we had
shipped everything. It only cost about 3-4 grand to ship over the contents
of a whole house and it cost me way over 15 to replace it all. Even now I
think "oh I will just go and get that book" and cant find it ( Its my
only regret with coming here is all my bits and pieces.

Try http://www.dse.co.nz & www.noelleeming.co.nz good places to get a rough
price for white ware.

http://www.placemakers.co.nz/index2.html & http://www.mitre10.co.nz are
like B & Q diy bits.

Hope this helps

I've moved twice once from UK to Auckalnd and then from Auckland to Brisbane, and I made some of the same mistakes TWICE.

1) To cut down the cost of shipping I've left things behind and it's just not worth the saveing in shipping costs. I got a quote for everything from Auckland to Brisbane but then decided not to take a few of the larger items, which must have reduced the volume by 25% (one was a double bed) but only got about $200 reduction in shipping costs. Less than 10% of total cost for shipping.

2) Going from UK to Auckand I'd just bought a top of the range video recorder and so I didn't want to part with it for a pittance in the UK, but didn't bring my TV. My video recorder sat in the box for 7 years after giving up trying to get it working in NZ. I'd have been better off bringing my UK TV, and ditching my video recorder in the UK.

3) When I move back to Auckand I intend to take everything (includeing the kitchen sink if I have one spare) with me this time ( I may be a slow learner but it clicked eventually).

The choice of things you get in NZ is severely restricted because it's such a small market, and the futher away from Auckland you get the worse it is. You can get all the important items but the no of different brands is tiny compared to the UK.

The same probem occurs in Australia but not to the same extend as it's a bigger market.

I've a 3 piece suite I had for 10 years in the UK and it's still going strong over here in Brisbane (It's now a 2 peice as one of the chairs got broken going from UK to NZ). Even think I'll take this back to NZ with me when go.

I generally say to people that they should take everything other than:
a. junk
b. things that clearly won't work (eg many TVs).

Electrical voltage is not an issue for those coming from the UK. It
might be for those coming from North America. Although voltage
adaptors are available, it's not always worth buying these for low
value electrical items.

Even if you did take all the "electrical goods" would they work in NZ,
i.e. compatibility of voltage rating, plumbing pipe sizes, etc, etc.

Just change the plug and away you go. Both NZ and Oz use same voltage as in the UK.

NZ and Oz use the same plugs even, and so moving between their you don't even have to change the plugs.

Hiya Emmy and Phil and Gra.B, we used to live in Leigh Park (no wonder we emigrated!). Hubby worked at Pall Europe, Farlington and I worked in sales at Kenwoods. We got back to Australia two weeks ago from a world trip, including a week in the UK. Visited Southsea (ahh Billy Mannings, scene of a mis-spent youth). Wouldn't go back there for quids (Southsea was nice though, probably cos of the memory lane factor). regards adelaidegirl

Forgot to mention, we brought next to nothing with us and spent the next couple of years bitterly regretting our decision. Bring the lot is my advice. adelaidegirl

My family and I are heading for Oz next year and we're currently
planning to sell all the furniture, white goods etc and just take
personal things like clothes, bedding, books, CDs, ornaments and so
on.

Maybe it's different for me but I don't have any really expensive/good
quality/sentimental items of furniture and I feel like it's time to
clear out and start afresh in my new life. I accept it's going to cost
me but I'm planning to start with basic stuff and upgrade as I have
the money and inclination. I did this before when I separated from my
husband so I know I can cope with a whole new start.

However, if you treasure your familiar surroundings and want to feel
"at home" straight away it must be worthwhile shipping stuff over. I'd
agree it's worth checking out whether your white goods will work
though.
