What sort of wood is allowed through customs with getting a spray

Re: What sort of wood is allowed through customs with getting a spray
I have two antique pieces of furniture, one with old bore holes and i have been trying to get them treated here to AQIS standards to get them in. Unfortunately, despite a flurry of emails (they reply quite promptly) and talking to various companies here in the uk it looks like i will have to take them untreated and leave it up to AQIS to decide to fumigate or not. Of the five treatments AQIS allow 2 are now prohibited here, two require strict licenses and have to be done in special chambers so require you taking and collecting the wood and the last one, treating with a preservative is possible but only if you can get Austalian trade named insecticides, UK or Euopean ones with exactly the same active ingredients applied in the same way are not accepted....
I have the emails from AQIS if you want to read them, any info you have to the contry would be appreciated.
One question i asked that thyey didn't answer is if the wood needs to be fumigated do they take it away from the rest of the shipement or do they do the whole container? I don't want all my photos and books sprayed with bromide!
Cheers

Did you have a certificate to say it had been treated and sealed? and if so what did they treat it with?

Alright, here's a dumb question - how do you know if the wood's been treated? Is having a lacquer or varnish on it enough? I've got no idea about these things....!!

Re: What sort of wood is allowed through customs with getting a spray
I brought in two wooden elephants from Kenya but my other half had an elephant from Sri Lanka that they wanted to fumigate due to its size?? It cost $350 to fumigate and $200 to detroy (with a few other things) so we just told them to destroy it. I also had a bag destroyed that as made out of water hyacinth apparently I have no idea what this is and I have not missed the bag as I don't know which one it was so no loss. All our other wooden carved things from around the world were ok. The thing they were really upset about was the illegal firearm that was in our consignment (long story) so our goods were seized for 2 months while they investiagted us - or rather me as I had signed all the paperwork. So after facing a $250K fine and a possible 10 year jail sentance my best advice to you is check and double check everything, especially if you are getting professional packers in and not packing everything yourself.

i do have an elephant from Sri Lanka but that is painted (dont know if that makes a difference???). We have a couple of statues from Kenya, a wooden mermaid from Bali, wooden door plaque of dolphins, one of those wooden trinket holders (square one with loads of small sections for little odds & sod type of ornaments), a large wooden jewellry box, small table, wooden plant holder and quite a few other wooden bits (am starting to wish that i'd bought ceramics whenever i've travelled!!!!).....
Do you know if they fumigate/spray items on an individual basis - or do they group together say small things and do them together under one price?
I just said to the OH that if all my favourite things cant come then i'll be gutted....taken a good few years of travelling to collect them. People always comment on our house and these things (which are a big part of me).
I know it's a bit sad probably - but travel mementoes are the only materialistic things i have that i value........sod the TV and other furniture!

I contacted AQIS and they responded with a link to this page
www.aqis.gov.au/icon
They say to look through the icon pages for up to date info and can also do a search on there. Click on search icon, type in name of item (for example, wooden items) but leave blank country of origin and end use, they say this will stop the search being narrowed down too much.
If we cannot find the info they want then they say to email customs.

Illegal firearm? yikes, hope that was some kind of misunderstanding - and not something the packers slipped into your worldly goods!!!!

Like everyone else says if you are in any doubt contact customs prior to leaving. The agent this side usually deals with any fees for fumigation and lumped it together for us. We chose destrcution as opposed to fumigation purely because it was cheaper as we had to fork out $1500 for our consignment to be x-rayed by a mobile machine (due to the firearm). It soon adds up!
Good luck with your wooden items. We were lucky that most of ours get through and I understand what you mean, they are memories from travel and are have great sentimental value so check if they will be a problem before you go.
