Default What are the medical Privileges of a PR Holder

Hi,

I am a new PR holder and by the grace of God, I am perfectly fit and fine. No health issues what so ever. But wanted to check what are the privileges of a permenant resident in Australia. Like do we have a free medicare (by paying tax offcouse)? or do we have restricted access to medicare untill we get citizenship?

If I do have full medicare support then can some one let me know how hard it is to get medicare card and how long does it take?

Regards,

You are entitled to Medicare so long as you are actually living in Australia.

And your responsibilities will be to pay your medicare levy and, if you are a high income earner, your medicare surcharge (or take out private health insurance).

Very easy to get a medicare number, just go to your local office with ID, passport with visa in it & proof of residency. They give you a number there & then & you will get the card through the mail a week or two later.
You really should get one because you never know when an accident may happen!

But if you don't have a job, and therefore do not pay tax and do not pay the Medicare levy), you still have full access to Medicare (with a PR visa or as a citizen).
