G there is a brewery down here in Richmond, called Mountain Goat - a couple of Englanders at work swear its as close as they've found to English ales. Have you heard of it?
They open the brewery up as a bar on Wed & Fri nights - been a few times and the beer is certainly different although the one problem is that as usual it's served ice cold - needs a bit of standing time!

Personally I like James Squire Golden and/or Amber Ale you can pick it up @ 44 bucks per slab at DMurphys now and again.
Best find I've had a Dans recently was Youngs special London Ale (6.4 pct) @ 25 bucks for 4 x 500 ml bottles. Which I reckon would be close to the same cost as across the bar sales in the UK.

You don't get proper beer here.
The "men" (sic) drink various forms of foul tasting chemical concoctions which they call beer but which really does not come close.
the nearest comparison would be what we used to call "lad's ale" in England......the stuff you drink before you are grown up enough to move on to proper beer.
They mostly drink out of half pint pots as well
Probably best stick to the girl's drinks

The girls also swig wine straight from the bottle.
