What kind of spider?????

I cant seem to upload a photograph as I'm currently using an Iphone! Doh!

Anyway a few days ago we noticed what looked like a slug in the corner of our patio, up high where the roof meets the wall. It obviously wasnt a slug or I wouldnt be asking the question!! It looks like its made of dry bird poo!! Yuk! Well not really but same 'dry' texture, pod/slug shaped, black in colour and about an inch and a half long.
being wimpy poms we sprayed it with bug spray 'just in case' and after much proding and poking about five small greyish baby spiders fell out, dead thank goodness!
Today we found another three of these nest/egg thingys and we are freaking out!! I keep expecting to bump into some giant mummy spider!
Has anyone got any idea what kind of spider would build/ lay these things???!!!!

Its a wasp building a nest and they collect dead spiders and put them inside. Wait till night time and then bash it off the wall.

That sounds like a mud dauber wasp nest to me. You often find spiders in old ones. The wasps are actually quite harmless and non-aggressive (unlike European wasps) but they do look a bit nasty! We have heaps of them around the house.

Is that so the wasp won't see you creeping up?

Thanks to everyone who replied, looks like its defo one of those wasp nests. We had blasted it off the wall with the hose yesterday and a new one appeared overnight. The spiders inside were dead and quite large so im pretty sure they didnt start off as babies who grew mega fast in 24 hours!!
Feel loads better that hundreds of spiders wont be hatching whilst i sleep!
