LOL... I actually really would do that... Reason being if they are big and nasty and beelike you'll need a 180 buck visit from a pest controller.... If you/I reckon I can handle them... Two cans of Baygon.
It almost certainly will be some kind of wasp, Most of those are relatively harmless. Hopefully they aren't Bees or Hornets, short of finding a entomologist on these board then you can make your own mind up re the 180 bucks or sorting it yourself.
BTW spray them at night time

Is the nest like solid clay?
Could be a potter wasp http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisb...PotterWasp.htm
We get them and they are fascinating to watch building the nest. They don't bother humans and you get grubs out of the nest, not a hoard of marauding wasps.

It's gone, my neighbour got rid of it for me. We have a very inquisitive 9 month old boxer, so I wasn't taking any risks...

Probably a mud wasp.
They build anywhere. Corner of windows. doors and walls and inside anything.
We found a bunch inside our sunbed.
Often it's just a mound though rather than a uniform shape.

this is australia. if you have to ask what the nest is, its probably highly dangerous with man-eaters contained within.
