Good idea - why didn't i think of that.

Its a contract so you can skank them whenever after 3 months. They'll deserve it if they are ripping you off

Hi OP - take whatever comes your way first and you can change later on (say after 6 months) if this role doesn't suit your needs. Consider yourself lucky that you landed a job offer sitting overseas, asking best job offer sitting overseas is asking too much

They've offered 12 month contract today - I don't think I could realistically walk after 4 or 6 months? Would this cause problems in explaining it to a future employer?

You can end the contract anytime by giving the notice as detailed in the contract.

It's a contract, so the answer is no.

To be honest though, it seems to me that they are using UK rates at them moment rather than Australian rates. The UK contract market is depressed right know so daily rates have come down. $500/day for a PM role is too low and if they are planning on making you perm you don't need an ABN.

I beg to differ, contracts have notice periods on both sides. Companies terminate contracts early by giving notice and so do contractors.

Its perfectly legal but the question of if its ethical is down to the individual and also the circumstances.

That's exactly right.

Of course it's ethical, it's what is agreed in the contract and as you say, both parties can take advantage of it. Contracting is a business arrangement and should be viewed as a business arrangement rather than an employer/employee relationship.

Right, when you said "the answer is no" you meant "no you won't be asked to explain it", I responded thinking you meant "no, you can't walk away".

Short answer - yes you can walk away by giving the required notice, its unlikley you'll be asked to explain (other than "why are you leaving", similar to applying for a new job when employed as a permie).

They know that they are playing a game of risk by offering you half the local market rate for your role. Loyalty doesn't come into it as they can ditch you according to the contract or vice versa. IMO they are banking on the fact that it’s the path of least resistance for you, that they can get you (an asset) on the cheap.

They know your work and know they can rely on you. Feedback from others and myself is that they would not get the same by advertising localy at $500 p/d. Perhaps they could attract somebody else from the UK on those dollars but a Permanent Resident with business knowledge? Doubt it.

Maybe you should play the game with them. If you can live with the fact you are getting screwed on the $ then you will be getting local PM experience and potential networking in Sydney. I have heard the local experience card being played but others obviously haven't. Perhaps it depends on the role.

Say you want a 6 month role to keep your options open. Your thinking of maybe trying other cities etc. Then you can leave after 6 without burning any bridges

Disagree with this, asking for a 6 month when 12 is on offer demonstrates your lack of commitment, if you want an extension after 6 you may not get one.

I think its playing it straight and keeping your options open. Its better than after 6 months breaking the 12 month contract to get more pay somewhere else, Which is what will happen.

After 6 months local experience as a PM you won't want to be getting paid $500 a day unless you're a (ahem) mug
