Hi

We're planning on opening a bank account while on our Reccie next month (probably with HSBC). It seems we may as well take advantage of the fact we are in Oz to do it rather than tussling with the overseas branch here.

What documents will they require? If they want something with an Oz address on it we may be a bit stuffed!

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Buzzy

We opened one with westpac and just needed passport and drivers licence, but your credit card comes in handy for ID too
Good luck, have a great time

Requirements differ from institution to institution but generally you need to provide 100 points worth of ID. Depends on the person and institution as to how far they'll bend the rules. Not sure as to how far they'll go for someone not living in the country yet.

Some things you could use as identification

Drivers Licence
Passport
Marraige Certificate
Birth Certificate
Other accounts held with bank ie: credit card, savings accounts, term
deposits

BTW they may ask for a tax file number as well for with-holding tax purposes.

They don't need 100 points of ID if you have been in the country less than 3 months, we just used our passports as ID

Didn't I say that passports are ok for ID and I was unsure about new arrivals?

So much for the orignal reason for adopting the 100 points to stop people opening accounts to hide money fraudulently ie multiple receivers of welfare payments, criminal proceeds etc.

Yes, I know you said you were unsure. That's why I added it cos I did know

Yes, I agree with you on the other point. Although going through everything to get a visa is probably going a bit too far for anyone wanting to just launder money.

Much easier to open an account in Nigeria or somewhere like that I'd think
