Default What Do You Miss?

Hi all,

Just whiling away the long wait like so many on this NG, and we were wondering, for all those already down-under (Oz or NZ) what do you miss the most about dear old UK?

The ability to easily change jobs, the incestuous nature of the corporate world (don't upset anyone in Wellington) and Christmas in Winter - don't be fooled, Christmas in the sun is great but it makes Winter a long haul with no break in the middle...

I spoke to someone a while ago in Perth and they said the history (castles and
suchlike) and of all things getting dresssed up in hats and coats on a frosty
winters day. Jez

having only been here a year, i think the biggest thing i miss about Blighty is the lack of "americanisms" compared to over here. Also miss the Lake District (Alpine regions over here are good, but not as spectacular as Cumbria / Scotland).

oh - the sense of humour - it took me over 6 months to understand the Australian sense of humour; be warned.

thoughtful drivers is another....i rate this place as second only to the french for bad driving (lmao !) !!

things i dont miss about the UK:
1) The "rush rush rush" bull*&%$ of corporate life
2) cost of living
3) having to travel for 5+ hours to get to anywhere nice (ex-London)
4) diving in a drysuit with electric heaters.....and not being able to see the hand in front of your face

bah - its monday - what can i say - only another 49 weeks to wait for PR !

Cadburys chocolate & M&S stuff seems to be a favourite for ex-UKers (trust me, I
know: about half my suitcase was full of that stuff when I went to visit my mum &
friends last December in Darwin).

When (sorry...if) I get out there, I'll probably miss those cold winter mornings -
the ones where you get out of bed & freeze 'coz the heating didn't come on. Oh, no.
Hang on. No I won't...

Lee.

Well this is more from mainland Europeans, but I guess UKers would feel the same.
They miss the culture. We have no real culture... just borrowed bits and pieces. The
Aussie culture that has developed and is noticeable, more revolves around mateship
etc. It does not, however, have any real tangible attachments. There aren't many
festivals or unique foods associated with Australia. So if you like all of that back
home, you'll definitely miss it when you come out here.

Oh and Christmas is usually a hot stinking sweaty day

about Christmas - I spent my first Xmas in Victoria camping - in the Alpine Region. Woke up Xmas morning to 4 degrees celcius and snow ! Over the Xmas break, chalet owners in Buller and Hotham were snowboarding !
