Hi,

There's been a few posts about which Oz (or Uk if you wish to share) subs are good/bad or ugly. I was wondering what was it that brought you to live where you do and any comments on it's good and bad points.

Cheers

Well no replies so far so I thought I'd bump this up. I'm in Highgate Hill, central Brisbane because of school catchment area and also because I can walk 15 to 20 minutes down the hill to catch the City Cat (catamaran) for a 3 minute journey along the Brisbane River to St Lucia campus, University of Queensland.

I like -
being close to city centre and everything yet still got some wildlife - bush turkeys shoot out in front of cars and it's quite funny watching them scream to a halt so as not to run the turkey down.
Not experienced the heat of the summer yet so don't know how I'll cope with that. Bit of an older area so I have to travel quite a bit for a big shopping area.
Very mixed housing area so old Queenslanders next to apartment blocks means mix of residents - hippies, old people, office workers, all mixed in together.

Thanks Sue for the Bump. That's the kind of info I was looking for. I can read and surf all day about suburbs, houses, schools etc but it's different when you hear what things are really like.

Cheers

I live in Glebe, Sydney. It's within walking distance of the CBD and home to the Australian bookshop of the year (numerous wins ). It was chosen at random ... Mr GG and I wanted to be near the city, so I drew a radius on a map and started working inwards. Why here rather than, say, Annandale ... I dunno. Just from research on-line and in books, I felt it would suit us better; it just felt right. And it's in budget!

We're in Merewether, Newcastle (NSW). No real choice in moving to Newcastle because Gav's job bought us here, but we LOVE it here!

We're just a few Ks out of the CBD, close enough to walk in, and have a fantastic beach (plus coffee shop, bar, ocean swimming baths) within 4 mins walk of our house.

Newcastle itself is very, very small for a city - but it's up and coming , there are strange sculptures, quite a lot of outdoor sitting coffee shops and bars and a beautiful wharf to be dive bombed by frisky pigeons and seagulls! Then in the other direction you have lake MacQuarie.

Such a MASSIVE step away from our previous life in Essex and Leeds!

We moved to Cairns because, initially, we liked the 'feel' of it.

Upon arriving permanently and searching for a real home to make our own, we looked towards the northern beaches. Not because of anything to do with living right near the beach but because we found the area to be exceptionally peaceful and safe for the kids.

That aside, where we live is SOoooooooo beautiful, words cannot do justice to it and if, like us, you enjoy the outdoors, then it is almost paradise. Only a few Km's whichever way and you can stumble across the nicest people and the most stunning areas in which to have a holiday ( even a few days / long weekends worth).

FNQ is the place to be!!!

We live in Ormiston which is bayside. It is handy for the gold coast, brisbane city and also the sunshine coast. It has a lovely feel about it here and we have settled really well. It is not commercialised and is quite quiet but we like it that way. It is near the marina at Cleveland where we go sometimes for a meal or walk. There are bike tracks and playgrounds and the local outdoor pool is just down the road.

I'm in Newtown in Sydney. The name is somewhat misleading considering its one of the oldest parts. Most of the buildings are quite old, and I love the higglypiggly nature- no Identikit housing around, mostly period buidlings. It has plenty going on ,masses of cafes/pubs/bars, loads of live music and is an I guess what you'd call an alternative area, reminding me much of Camden. 10 mins on the train to the City and easy access to anywhere else.

We are in Malabar Sydney.
2 mins walk from the beach, very quiet, 20mins drive to the city and to be honest its 30 mins from everything you could ever need. Living costs are a bit mental though, but that’s Sydney !!!

20 mins to the beach
20 mins to the Dandenong ranges national park (where king parrots and rosellas eat out of you hand)
1 1/2 hours to the snow
40 mins to the city (off peak)
1 hour to the airport

Native birds in the back garden
Its green and lovely for 8 months of the year

I can see the sea on my drive down to work everyday
Small welcoming community

Loads of other national parks and days out all around

Is that enough??

We live far south East of Melbourne in a small leafy village (the Aussies laugh when i say that) No mc mansions in sight and i love it

I live in City Beach, Perth for the following reasons.
3/4 mins walk to the beach
5min drive to the best(local) surf beaches
I see the ocean everytime I pull out/into our road.
15 min drive to CBD,
10 min drive to work
1 min walk to Bus route into CBD
20 min drive to Fremantle
15min drive to Hillarys (marina, shops, restaurants etc)
10min drive to Subiaco,Claremont (shops,cafes,restaurants,bars etc)
Lots of parks around the houses, lots of birds.
No sub-dividing of blocks allowed (min size is about 750sqm I think) so there are no duplex's or heaps of new propertys crammed on top of each other.
No high rise apartments etc (not that there are a great deal anywhere in Perth thankfully)
Plus the great weather.
