Hi we stopped over in Singapore and our 20 month old sat on our lap in the taxi, we just put the seat belt round us and then held on to him for dear life!! (were told before we went by several people not to put the belt round them as more dangerous). Good luck. x

Hi depends on state that you are going to, we were in Tasmania (which comes under VIC laws) so our 5 and 7 year old did not have to have anything, although being typically English we did buy them booster seaters once we had our car sorted as I felt better that they were safter.

It is not the point of the seat absorbing the impact, but rather the difference in the anchor points, therefore not providing the same standard of security.
So insuance aside, are you saying the UK cars are safe in the UK but somehow when you travel to Oz they become unsafe ? !! Using the car seatbelts the seats will have the same achorage in the UK and Oz, so they will provide the same standard of security. Yes with OZ seats there is an additional achorage point at the top, but this doesn't make the UK seats unsafe

Its not a matter of which is safer, (I'm not going to give an opinion on that) its a matter of twhich is legal, and makes your insurance valid.

The anchorage requirements are very different and this is normally the key difference. The ISOFIX system in the UK is very similar to what is required in Oz but its not part of the Oz Standard. Most cars in Oz come with anchor points in the rear and must be used.

Under ones need this huge capsule thing which takes the entire back seat almost.

The point is that whilst each system may offer similar standards of safety the standards are different in each country and you should respect each standard if you dont want fines / lost insurance.

This is what governments do - create annoyance. I can't imagine harmonisation of car seat standards is high on the list of whoever does this stuff!

We are forever having to deal with different car seat standards and also trying to avoid having to use ropey car hire company seats.

In Oz we normally rent them from the Ambulance Service who will fit it for a very reasonable fee in a private car.

In Singapore we just hold on. In America we use the British ones. (not sure what the standard is there but imagine its different for each state!) In Europe we use the British ones.

Take it with you or;
Buy a new one or:
Avoid the situation where you need it or;
Improvise.

Same as you would do for any object really.
