In order -
My family. My first tiny Wimpey house I've done up from nothing to the tiny Wimpey home it is now! Snow. The Archers. Henderson's Relish (strictly for the Sheffield crew that one!) :) |
family and friends
knowing where I'm going (ie where the roads lead to) knowing what brands are decent and where to shop for what decent speed limits to balance it up.....I don't miss: Nationwide Building Society taking 30mins to travel 5 miles tiny house with barely any garden the miserable / wet / cold weather Only been here a month and everything is going ok....but it would be so much better if you could just bring all the people you know and love with you. |

Re: What do you.......
Theres a pattern, leaving UK, OZ is a dream, you will miss nothing, UK's a dump, hate it blah blah.
If you've never visited OZ the UK magically is even more of a dump OZ is even more wonderful. Then spend 20odd thousand quid moving, take a 50% pay cut, find out the same old stuff happens in OZ:D After a few months of spending the quids, doing the holiday thing, novelty starts to wear off, suddenly:eek: theres things about the UK you miss Voila, just give it time :D :D |

Originally posted by ABCDiamond The NHS for children !! Back in UK all the prescriptions etc were free, here we have to pay! Don't think I'll be visiting the denist here... unless I have too. Although I suppose I was lucky in the UK in that I was able to see an NHS one, my mother-in-law just had a tooth out at a cost of GBP90.00. What do I miss? Family... even my mother-in-law! Other English people... people who can understand my sense of humour and know where I'm coming from. Money... I am so much poorer here British Employers... feels like I've gone back in time with regards to all things job related Football... I do watch some premiership games on TV here but the time difference plays havoc with my sleep patterns over the weekend. And if Tranmere Rovers make the FA Cup Final then I'm sorry, I'll be on the first plane outta here. Spring (but not too much as, on the whole, I prefer the weather here) That's about it I think. |
Re: What do you.......
There are certainly things about Britain we miss, and we have only been here 6 months. Though to be honest I didn't come here because I hate UK and I fully expected there to be things I would not like and would miss.
Don't come out here thinking that Oz will give a perfect answer all that you think is crap about England. It may well answer some of it but there is crap here to. We are happy though because we have achieved a lot of things that we could not in the UK. We live in a village, in a detached house and our kids go to a village primary. We could not have afforded that in the UK. My job pays 18000 GBP less than the UK (Hopefully I'll be getting a payrise when probation is over) but we don't have such a big mortgage. Its swings and roundabouts but I'm pretty certain that there hasn't been someone who has arrived here and after a while missed things about the UK. As Dotty said time will make you appreciate stuff. |

With dentists, if you are eligible for the Health Care Card, you can get Free Dental treatment under Medicare, usually in a teaching hospital. |

Re: What do you.......
Originally posted by ABCDiamond I'm suprised the broken arm cost anything, did you go to a hospital ? I broke an arm and leg, and went through the hospital system, in the same way as NHS in UK, and it didn't cost me anything. With dentists, if you are eligible for the Health Care Card, you can get Free Dental treatment under Medicare, usually in a teaching hospital. ABC, I should have said... As we had only just got here we couldn't Medicare cards until we proved to the Medicare people that we had made a commitment to stay in Australia. We had to show them things such as proof of job, home address as well as obvious things such as passport and visa. Even though we were able to show them all that, we still couldn't get the cards as we hadn't enrolled my son into a school - we couldn't as they were on the term holiday at the time. Despite our pleading with them we were forced to pay all the medical expenses ourselves - GP, X-Rays and Orthopaedic Surgeon. A tidy sum. Once we eventually received our Medicare card we were able to claim some of the costs back. It was all an unpleasant experience though... and our first introduction to Australian bureaucracy. I'm not sure if this kind of thing is typical though - we have lived in Australia before and thought it would be a simple matter of renewing our Medicare card. Should have know better... after all this is Australia :D |
This sounds like bad luck, I just went into Medicare with passports and that was all that was required

Most things I miss are trivial but I guess if you can't have somthing you want it all the more.
Apart from the usual stuff family etc. I really miss soaking in the bath reading crappy Sunday papers. :D Miss not being able to get from A to B at a reasonable speed. NHS! being diabetic I get prescriptions etc free. Here its a scary amount of cash.:( I even miss the grumpy staff at the local Spar shop. I am sick of the false "how you going" mlarky, But as Dotty said, no doubt when I leave here I will miss somthing about the place. :D |
Little muddy footpaths with styles and small green farmers fields.
Country lanes with trees overhanging the road. My family & friends (number one by far, but i can't be arsed to move it to the top...this lists not in order ok!!) Proper beer....aussie stuff (some of it) is great, but still can't match proper british ale. The crunch sound frosty grass makes. Footie. Rugby (not the league sh*te...) Rock climbing without having to practically run up the crag because the rock scalds! Lots of other things. Nearly all trivial, nearly all material. Miss them enough to make me stop and think about it, not enough to want to rush home. Family and friends....thats the only thing i truely miss..... |
Friends and familarity. Doesn't sound a lot, but it feels a lot!

1. Getting soaked wet through going from the house to the car. It's always raining in the UK.
2. Waking in the morning thinking it's night time but finding out it's 8am , because it's the winter. 3. Paying so much for petrol 4. Standing in a queue at a supermarket checkout 5. Waiting 5 years for an Operation 6. Living in a house thats no bigger than an average Aussie shed. 7. Travelling for 30 min to go 2 miles 8. Not being able to get to work on time by public transport 9. Hearing your neighbours (oh err!!) next door because the walls are so thin. 10. Being mugged when going to the corner shop to buy a newspaper "Take me home country roads, to the place I belong" lol lovl lol lovl lol lovl:D :D:scared: |
Firstly, i miss friends and family...
You cant meet people here who will replace people youve know for 20years or so. Kebab vans at 2am.... Being able to play the xbox without the controller getting sweaty after 5 minutes... The country....its way better than the bush... Tescos... Tv adverts for proper stuff and not the local hoover shop... Eastenders....They show the bill so why not Eastenders? Grey sky....ok maybe i dont miss that! I miss a decent wage for a decent days work... Been here nearly a year now and its still difficult getting used to everything. I think even after 5 years it will still be hard. Dont get me wrong , i love it here, but they do seem to be living in the dark ages a little!! |
