Default What do shippers do with glass?

Hi all,

We had a massive clear out of the loft yesterday and found all the boxes for the various crystal glasses we were given when we got married. We kept them all for whenever we next moved to kep things safe but do shippers use these or do they wrap them individually in their own stuff?

Thanks for any help

Lucy.

Thanks Ginny - that's what I reckoned happened so I think we'll get rid - I'd feel happier with them individually wrapped anyway.

Thanks

Lucy

It's up to the shippers, to be honest. Some have policies/procedures, others dont. All our crystal vases & glasses arrived fine, and they were just wrapped in lots of paper and carefully stored in shipping cardboard boxes.

We did have problems with furniture, but that was due to the container being swapped out in Singapore, and the guys there being far less careful, but that was nothing to do with the original packaging.

Is it common for containers to be swapped - I thought the container it left in is the container it arrived in? Might that have to do with sharing containers - we are probably going to be sharing.

We are using John Mason. The guy there said the packers will wrap & pack everything in their boxes. Also, to point out anything delicate or of sentimental value to ensure it's wrapped up as much as can be.

I got further written info from them which said if you've got original boxes you can give them to the packers & let them use them if you prefer. They will list what they've packed & what you've packed. I presume customs will be more interested in anything packed by non-shipping staff.

I think they just don't like you using boxes that were previously used for food stuffs.

I got quotes for a shared contained & sole use 20ft reefer. The sole use one came in slightly cheaper plus we don't have to worry about anyone else's dates, stuff being inspected etc.

John Mason also gave me the option to buy container cleaning insurance for £15.00.

We're spending today sorting out the house in preparation for the shippers coming in on 19th Dec. So much to do

If you have the original packing for any items , put them in it ,including electrical goods, as long as you have the foam inserts , leave the boxes open so the packers can check them ,most guys will okay them and put {pbr ] packed by removalist this will cover you for insurance.............. mm

Lucy - sometimes it can happen if you are sharing. Sharing is a hassle.
Ours wasnt shared, but the shippers were paid for by our company who had the "cheapest quote" policy. The shippers swapped the container to a cheaper one "more suitable for SE Asia" (ie cheap & disposable :scared: ) and that is where the problems started. Took us 2 years to get all our money back on the insurance.

Please make sure you are insured and that everything is insured on a replace old for new basis.

We kept loads of boxes but none of the foam inserts so I think all our boxes are going to the tip!! There is no way our green bin could cope!!!

Hello, We used John Mason and our stuff was delievered about 10 days ago. the wrapped and sealed everything (including lightbulbs from lamps Everything was wrapped individually in paper in double skin boxes.

(They were the cheapest you can haggle a bit) and the service was excellent. Everything arrived in A1 condition.

Containers for Australia are some times transhipped in Singapore. ie, taken off say, a Japan bound boat and held on the wharf till a Australia bound boat comes through, with m/t slots. They dont m/t the container and fill another one.,,,,,,,,,,,, mm

We aren't going to fill a container (I would guess about 2/3) - can you opt for a sole container even if you don't fill it - I realise you will prob have to pay more.

they did with ours

took all the light stuff at the top of the first container, and put it at the bottom of the next container... computers placed against the shipping wall... bikes placed underneath sideboards which in themselves were turned upside down... boxes that didnt fit were ripped open and the contents thrown back inside. and some boxes never made it all.....

but trust us, they did a number on us, and it really isnt that common!
