what have others done whilst waiting for all their furniture to arrive. At least then have something to sit on and eat off !! Of course when your furniture arrives you can put it outside. Buy inflatable matresses to sleep on. Once your beds arrive you can still use them for guests/sleepovers etc |
Re: what do people do whilst waiting for their stuff
We rented a fully furnished place for 8 weeks. It was great when we moved & our stuff arrived!

We were given a 'furniture hire pack' from PABS: http://www.pabs.com.au/ Luckily the OH's employer paid for them, but they were very good and gave us everything from towels, to beds to teaspoons! Would highly recommend them! :)

Re: what do people do whilst waiting for their stuff
We have had a few new people to the country stay in our accommodation while they look around for something more long term, and wait for their container to arrive. It can take a little while to 'get your bearings' and decide where you want to settle down permanently!
We've also provided references to real estate agents when they've applied for tenancies. This can be handy as the experience seems to be that Aussie real estate agents are more interested in local information (eg. they like being able to call up someone in the same time zone to check people out as potential tenants). We have also done written references for people who have stayed with us for eight weeks or longer. |
Re: what do people do whilst waiting for their stuff
My mother completely furnished our house with some spare stuff she'd removed from an investment property. We're still borrowing a couple of couches. :)

Re: what do people do whilst waiting for their stuff
We hired a furnished rental for 4 weeks and sent our stuff over 4 weeks before we flew, figured it was easier to borrow stuff in England surrounded by family and friends rather than struggle in Oz. Day our stuff arrived our rental was de-furnished! We never roughed it on airbeds or garden furniture!!

Re: what do people do whilst waiting for their stuff
We are living on camp chairs at the moment. We bought a new diningtable and chairs because we got rid of ours, we also bought a bed because we didn't bring ours. Our daughter is sleeping on an inflatable mattress while waiting for her bed to arrive. So the house we're renting is pretty sparse at the moment.

Much the same as above, we needed to buy an outside furniture set so used them in the house, we'd sold our f/f with the UK house so brought another when we got our house and we were a bed short in the shipping so brought another one to sleep on, same as tv we needed another so brought one and had bare minimal stuff for kitchen brought from supermarket. We lived like this for about 2 months but it was good fun :)
We did pretty much the same. We bought new beds and figured that the old ones could be put in the spare rooms. We also used a couple of the patio chairs in the front room and an empty box as a coffee table. We also lived like that for about 2 months. It's just a matter of making do, but yeah, it's all adds to the fun of starting a new life in a new country. |
Re: what do people do whilst waiting for their stuff
we came over with just a couple of suitcases, got rid of everything else then simply went to ikea and picked up some cheap things there to get started. Ikea seems much cheaper and better here its a lot more popular to I think

Re: what do people do whilst waiting for their stuff
We spent four weeks travelling on our way here so lessened the time we had to wait for our stuff. We also booked a furnished rental for 3 weeks on arrival so when we moved to a long term rental we only had a couple of weeks to make do. We shipped some beds, but not matresses so we bought matresses to be delivererd the day we moved in and slept on those on the floor, did a trip to Ikea for the kitchen basics, and bought a cheap small table and chairs to eat on. It was all part of the excitement of "our new life" and when our stuff arrived it felt like Christmas!
