we bought one soon after moving into rented place. In winter the sun does not always shine and with central heating non (or nearly) existing here, you soon wonder where to dry all the loads of clothes when it rains/cloudy. With one child and another on the way it was a must.

In other parts of Oz sometimes the humidity prevents clothes from actually getting dry.

If you have a dryer bring it with you. Infact bring as much with you as you can (that won't get stung by quarrantine)

I live in Perth and Perth has more annual rainfall than Manchester. Bring the drier if you have one.

I Took
  • 2 guitars
  • Some clothes (could have left most behind in retrospect)
  • A selection of photographs, certificates, etc
  • My darts

I Regretted Leaving Behind
  • A very nice airbrushed framed picture of a Formula One car
  • A sofa-sized leather bean bag
  • A Yamaha DJX keyboard (musical stuff is so expensive here)
  • My computer hard drives and fancy soundcard
  • My UK-based friends and family

I Couldn't Live Without
  • My Aussie-based family
  • My guitars
  • My computer and all it contains
  • Knowing what it would've been like to live here

I Have Not Used
  • My hiking boots (heavy, wasted baggage allowance there)
  • My old Chelsea scarf (not a band-waggoner, I remember losing 4-0 to West Ham in the piddling rain on an uncovered terrace ...)
  • My fake Wallabies jersey I was given before I left
  • My "HM Prison, Australia" T-Shirt ... more than once

Actually I agree about the fridge, wish we had brought ours too. It was probably the only thing we got rid of. We have only ever had one TV and it was old so we left that behind and bought a nice new one here. Still only have 1 though.

Wish I'd brought

Dyson (thought it would be too much hassle to clean -- very expensive out here)
Tumble drier (didnt think we'd use it -- we wouldnt use it often so not worth buying one, but would have been useful to have for "emergencies")
Bedside tables
Thick duvet (no heating here so house gets very cold at night - and not even proper winter yet!)
2nd Sofa
Computer table
Garden furniture
bikes
A years supply of always ultra
I should have replaced all my bras at M&S and bought out the whole spring/summer collection at Next....

Have used most stuff I bought...

Hubbies uk fishing stuff

Things we will be taking this time round:
Fridge/freezer - coped very well with the heat
Tumbledryer
New bed sheets
The cat
Our winter coats - we do intent to visit the uk and when we got back last time we were bloody freezing and not one of us had a coat!
New underware
Couple of boxes of washing powder

There is no alternative. All the local stuff is useless -- wont go into detail but it's not pleasant!! If "Always" are your brand of choice I strongly recommend packing a caseful!!! (I'll buy them off you if you find a local alternative!!!)
