I'm back in the UK for a few weeks to visit the family etc. staying at my father's place. About 10pm I called the missus in oz to see how she's doing etc. we had a good chat but it would appear that I didn't put the phone back on the hook properly - my father found it at 5 am still with the australian number in the display thus probably landing him with a phone bill for 7 hours to the other side of the planet! I feel so bad right now as it's money that we could really do without having to part with in the lead up to christmas etc...... what a dickhead I was

Will it be that bad, here we phone and its only about $5 an hour even 7 hours would be minimal cost. Just a thought that it might not be such a big amount in the end.

thanks for the kind posts guys. It's about 20p/min to oz so I've worked out it'll probably cost about £85 (Approx. A$210)

It may have something to do with the originating caller. (unfortunately for you)

You have to put down your receiver to end the call....the receiver can pick and put down their phone down etc..

that's why my old dear says anyhow

Why not use http://www.telediscount.co.uk to call Oz? Only 2p a minute, access by calling a UK 0844 no, no seperate billing, no registeration required.

The exchange notes inactivity on the line and disconnects. I think this happens after about 20mins. Just as well as what you did happens to a lot of people!

I wish it were true... I spoke to the phone company (ntl) who said thet the line would probably still been active for the 7 hours or so but couldnt give me a definite answer and couldn't tell me how much until the bill is printed. I asked the guy to double-check but I dont think he did. It sounded like I just got him out of bed. Good ol' British customer service at it's best eh

Don't get me started on NTL. They are infamous for having the countries worst customer services. Last time I range them (interactive services stopped working yet again) it took 30 minutes to get through then they guy at the other end couldn't give a toss. He also managed to cancel our sports/movies subscription (another 30 minute call) and when they put it back they charged us twice for that months rental (another 30 minute call). If we didn't think we had less than 12 months in Blighty I would have moved to Sky.

Actually why not try phoning the telco with a sob story and see if they will split the cost or something? Nowt to lose (apart from your mind while you spend 4 hours on hold, running up another bill in the process).
