From the few times I was there, OK, but a fair way from anything. Thus potentially boring for the new resident. Did not seem that much to do either...

Gets very cold in winter, snows sometimes, was even snowing there around a month ago when almost summer. A small city with all the facilities you need,
l think they built a fast train to Melbounre around 30-45 minutes to get there.

I asked someone who is from there for you.
I said "What is Ballarat like as a place to live, Boring?"
He said "No it's not that boring, there are worse places to live, but there is no beach"
And that was that!
No Beach - in his opinion is the biggest drawback to Ballarat.

Ballarat is just over an hour from where I live in Bendigo and there is a bit of 'friendly' rivalry between the Cities.
Personally, I do love Bendigo more, but Ballarat is a pretty City with some gorgeous old homes. It is a bit closer to Melbourne than Bendigo though.
There is quite a bit of tourism in Ballarat because of Souverign Hill and lots of lovely wineries. Its only an hour to the Beach down at Geelong.
If I had to live there, I would...but would chose to live in Bendigo.
