What areas to rent in for a Melbourne reccie visit?
Hi
We're doing a reccie visit to Melbourne in November and reckon we want to rent for 7 nights. We have been looking at the properties on ozstays.com.au, but at this point really don't know much about the areas in and around Melbourne. We want to end up in a decent area, close to the types of area we would go to on a weekend evening if we were living in the area. We'll have a car for during the day, but don't really want to take a car out in the evening
Which areas are cool and where should we avoid?
Thanks
Adam

Hi,
Just had a look at a few of the locations they are at and really, depends on what you are looking for.
Do you have kids? Are you wanting close to beach? Do you want the nightlife on your doorstep? Or do you want to be out in the 'burbs?

Hi
Thanks for your reply, we don't have kids, and although we love it by the sea, we're not slaves to the beach. The type of areas we are looking for are sort of bohemian/cosmopolitan places with arty type people, a mix of cultures and interesting architecture. We like doing the culture thing, going, seeing and doing. Oh and, of course, we're looking for great restaurants, bars, cafes and micro breweries etc. Not really nightclubbers though. So at this point we're looking to see what the potential is for things to do in the city when we're not working and doing domestic stuff.
In a way pinpointing the sort of suburbs we could settle in is a bit more of a bigger job that we'll tackle in our reccie week, but we're looking a a base that will give us access to that during the day and easy access to everything the city has to offer in the evening.
Cheers

Ok, well based on the suburbs on that website...go for either St Kilda or Carlton. You could also look at Brunswick or Fitzroy. Collingwood or Richmond are also great suburbs with lots of shopping, mixed cultures and a good base to travel from as public transport is plentiful.
Hope this gives you a starting point. As its just gone 8am I am sure there will be more Melbourne folk waking up and jumping online shortly and might give you a few other options.

Without a doubt for you, South Yarra, stayed there on a reccie trip, st kilda a bit dead like bournemouth or southport if you are from the north, god s waiting room.
South yarra has loads of vibe, lots of happening restaurants, and designer and bo ho clothes shops, its like the camden/notting hill of melbourne it seemed to us. expensive so im told in a trendy way if that makes sense, not posh just popular. The beach is 10 mins on a tram and funfair at st.kilda and youve got the tram and biggish rail station into town in 15 mins or so max whichever way you travel.
I really liked melbourne and your never far away from much there, but i didnt like the cold weather in the middle of summer, but very much like Manchester and many people who know both have said in the past it does them too.

Thanks everybody, we've now got a better idea of the areas that look good to us. It seems that South Yarra, Carlton and Fitzroy are the type of areas we are looking for and we have now booked accomodation in Carlton.
