Default What is it with all these sponsored links?

I am not the only one to notice that some words in a post become highlighted and when the mouse is put over the word it gives details of a sponsored link.

Now I am certain that the poster has not put in that link themselves. I find it distracts from what the poster is saying and misleading as it is not something they have posted, especially when there is the facility for posters to put their own links in.

If this is a new way of income Mr BE Owner, I for one do not like it

There's no such thing as a free meal is there? Supposedly free BE's, Yahoo, Google etc - the 'price' to pay is the likes of this and pop-ups. Now after posting this I'll just close the annoying eBay add which keeps popping up and Capital One and Casino on Net and ............. Of course there is the 'pay a subscription' option to reduce these things which is what Mr or Ms BE owner might be encouraging some to do?

It seems that place names are being linked to hotels and stuff, I liked the Reno one, but note Brisbane is now as well. Since I live in Brisbane and mention Brisbane a lot, will all me Brisbane links be underlined?

We should try and construct sentences which contain placenames (like the reno one) and see how many links can be achieved.

" My friend Sydney is doing a Reno and its Boston (i.e. Bostin). His wife Adelaide is a bit LA LA though"

Yeah, it doesn't seem to happen in every post.

But I've also noticed it.

Oh well, if it keeps the site free............
annoying though!

I don't get popups though. None at home, and only one when I start up at work (screensavers or smilies)
I do get ads at the top in Dutch though! Don't think many of you get that

In another recent thread I mentioned the soon to be released Gmail from Google which promises oodles more storage space and less Spam than Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN and the other well known 'free' web-based email services. The downside is that Google will browse your messages for key words and will put advertisers links on your screen - although they assure privacy apart from that! There's always a downside.

Am I different to others? Every time I open BE's I get pop-ups behind the BE's pages and on the taskbar. Does installing a 'pop-up preventer' like Adaware help?

..i don't mind the pop-ups,... i don't even mind the sponsored links, but what i do mind are the banner ads that talk or play music!!!! grrrrr.... it's embarrassing looking through the site for it to announce to the whole office...."hi my name is tracey..." or whatever the bluddy things says.

I know this site has to be paid for in one way or another and i fully support it, but i could do without the noises! (everyone will think i'm messing about on the net and not working like i should be!!! )

Don't you just hate it when that happens? Luckily I have my own office, so the main problem is that it makes me jump out of my skin and spill tea all over my keyboard.

I've seen these green links on another site. People complain there too, but I really don't understand why people resist them ... they are unobtrusive and as someone else pointed out, only appear randomly.

I'll be building a site soon, can anyone explain why they don't like sponsored links? I don't want to be missing an obvious problem.
