what about Sydney?

I know that it sounds mad but really thinking about Brisbane or Sydney as both are good for work. however never seem to hear of many people heading for Sydney - why is this? Is it really expensive or is it possible to find affordable accomodation - can any people living in sydney or who considered sydney give us an insight as it would be gratefully received

Rent is affordable just buying is expensive. Lots of British migrants want the cheap 5 bedroom house with pool by the sea. That costs millions in Sydney.

As an ex-Sydneysider, I preferred Sydney to all the other cities. But, then I would say that.

Sydney has the greatest variety of things to do, employment opportunities...and, as BP commented, the most expensive real estate.

Eg whatever you pay in Brisbane for a house, it's probably twice the price in Sydney for the equivalent (in terms of type and distance from the city centre). Where we lived, Fairlight, a 3 bedroomed house - nothing special - would probably cost at least $800k (~£300k). Like most places, prices have shot-up over the past 3 years.

Sydney has ~20+ beaches. We used to live ~7 miles from the centre - 15 minutes walk from Manly beach. Within 10 minutes drive we had Queenscliff, Harbord, Curl-Curl etc beaches. Also the climate is not as extreme as Brisbane.

I've really struggled to choose between sydney and brisbane as i loved them both. Always said if I emigrated it would be brisbane but have actually booked flights to sydney. I just love the fact the beaches are so close etc.
But saying that I think they are both fab cities and I'm opting for flying to sydney, renting for 6 months and then making a decision next year! Not practical for everybody but I don't have children etc!

Re: what about Sydney?

Syd is our planned destination. Mainly due that employment opportunites are greater (some in Bris but not as many) in Mr W field, which is important (to us) if emigration has a chance of working out.

Climate is suiting to our likes.

We can afford a decent house (still with a mortgage but will still be in early 30s when we move) but not beach views and not necessarily a pool - looking at Northern suburbs to east or just west of Pacific hwy.

Not perfect, but we like the city and surrounding area and think that we could make the place our home.

If things do not work out then moving back to UK should be easier, earning a higher wage in Syd compared to other places - ie we will lose out financially, but likely not to be extent of other places in Oz.

Diving available all around Sydney coast :D

A lot of it is personnal dislikes/like and facts for us that will help a successful emigration - it maybe our cup of tea, but not yours
