Whales travelling north along NSW coast

May 21, 2004

THOUSANDS of humpback whales would soon be seen along the NSW coast as they travelled north to give birth in warmer waters, whale watchers said today.

ORRCA, the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia, said today that more than 3,000 whales were expected to make the migration based on previous annual figures.

ORRCA spokeswoman Kris Madden said the whales travelled from Antarctica towards the equator, with most of those seen off the NSW coast stopping at Hervey Bay in Queensland to give birth.

The first reports ORRCA had received of a whale sighting was of a humpback off Terrigal, on the NSW central coast, several weekends ago, she said.

"We expect that from this weekend onwards we will start to see a dramatic increase in the number of reported sightings," Ms Madden said.

Sometimes they pop into Sydney harbour for a bit of grown up hugging. I missed it but they were under the bridge. Hopefully I will see some up at the Whitsundays in August.

Just read the Gold Coast bulletin and a whale was caught up in the shark nets at Currimbin yesterday, so they are already on their way. Watch out for more Louisa
