Weekend in Brisbane - suggestions on things to do?
To celebrate the GG's being married one whole year*, we're heading to Brisvegas at the end of August. Anyone got any suggestions on where to visit and any good restaurants/bars we shouldn't miss?
Plan to do a bit of research before heading north, but any local input welcome!
* - But I refuse to start counting from one again, as we've been together for over ten years ...
Cheers,
Nichola

Thanks, Mrs DB! I think there's some stuff there to keep us amused for a short break. We'll be staying fairly centrally (I think), so I hope we'll get to see a wee bit of the place.

We used to go to a pub called the victory, it had some good bands on when we were there.

Ditto everything Mrs D just said, plus don't forget to have a drink/meal/whatever on top of Mt.Cootha. Breathtaking views of the city from here. From memory, if you're not driving you can actually catch a bus up here. Fantastic day or night.
I particularly enjoyed the boat trip (from CBD) down to the Lone Pine koala sanctuary. Can't remember the name of the boat that does this but its advertised quite heavily at the tourist office. You'll also get to see some spectacular bat colonies on the way, though they do pong a bit!
You can combine a trip on the city cat with having a meal at Bulimba (Oxford Street). There are lots of restaurants here, and its a very hip place to be. There is a very trendy bar called Oxford 152 which is packed solid on Sunday afternoons and has live music.
I quite like Rosalie area for night time restaurants. Its packed most nights, especially when they're doing two for one. Paddington (Latrobe St) has quite a good Turkish restaurant with some good belly dancing mid-week!
The breakfast creek place Mrs D mentioned is HUGE. Has great steaks and is really quite unique. Has a kind of beer kellar atmosphere.
Enjoy your anniversary!!!

You could try a trip on the Kookaburra Queen, the paddle steamer that goes up and down the Brisbane River. They do a great 3 course lunch on there. It stops at various places including Southbank and Eagle Street Pier.
Or take a trip up to Tamborine Mountain. On Gallery Walk there are loads of restaurants and also art galleries to visit if that's your kind of thing

Oh - one thing I forgot in my last post....there's a Paddlesteamer that goes from Eagle Street up and down the river. It seems like a nice thing to do for a special occasion, but when we did it the food was awful, and really spoilt the evening. Maybe we just had a bad experience, but most people on the trip agreed the food was well below par. Just a word of warning.

Oh My God ...we posting conflicting views at exactly the same time. We must have been on one of their off-nights! Sounds like you had a much better meal than us!

Whoops, we posted at exactly the same time Netta
We found the food gorgeous - a buffet style 3 course lunch. We had concessionary tickets for the trip, but the staff forgot to bill us at the end of the cruise. They normally take payment at the beginning but as there were so many of us they said they'd do it at the end...and forgot.
This Aussie hospitality is great, don't you think

I think that generally the Aussie hospitality is some of the best we've experienced worldwide. We always land up leaving big tips wherever we go in Aus (when we can afford it!), because we're always amazed by the wonderful service we get compared to elsewhere. Seems like Juliecabs might be better off with the buffet style lunch rather than the set menu evening, but we were on the Kookaburra about 18 months ago, so things may well have changed. Shame we didn't get a free helping

Brisbane CBD at night from the river is breathtaking. Catch a Citycat from Bretts Wharf (Kingsford Smith Drive) for about $4 and take the 35 minute trip into the CBD. Get off at SouthBank and have a nice meal as there is plenty of choice....
The Tastes of India is a pretty good curry house as well!!
