We have TV picture but no sound...digi box needed???
Hiya
We have bout our TV from the UK. The ariel plugs in, we have a picture but no sound.
Do we need to buy an aussie digi box? Where is the best place to buy one? How much are they? Do you get more free channels with the box, like the UK?
Thanks

So is it worth bringing it then.
Been told so many times that it would not work.

This is apparently a common problem with TVs from the UK. We have a lovely 32in widescreen TV in the UK and we were told not to bother bringing it because of this reason. Apparently any Ozzie equipment that interprets the signal before it reaches the set will sort the problem out. So off to the shops for that video recorder or set top box. If that doesn't work you could always get surround sound......

We brought our TV from Scotland and it worked with no problems (Phillips widescreen bought 2003) - living in Bayside however channel 7 had a picture but no sound - all the other TV channels worked OK - we have just bought a digi box from Dick Smiths and we now have all terestial channels plus their digital channels - ie Ten, Ten 1, Ten 2, Ten 3 and Ten 4 - channels will continue to add more digital channels as time go's by - its not like in UK where if you buy a set top box you get some of the free 'Sky' channels - you have to get Foxtel to get that here but I think Foxtel is quite expensive and we are never in to watch TV anyhow!
cheapest and most up to date digi-box in Dick Smiths was $99 - not bad price really considering we now have far more 'terestial' channels to watch and improved picture quality.

Some of the older TV's will get a picture but no sound, but this can be got round by either having the TV converted when you arrive, or you can buy an Australian VCR or Set Top Box, when you get here and use that to receive the channels. We have an old TV that doesn't receive correctly, hooked up to a UK video player that can't be tuned in, but it operates perfectly just for watching Videos. Great in a child's room.
A link at www.videouniversity.com gives World Wide TV Standards information.
There are some differences, even on the PAL system, for example:
Australia uses System B : Colour = PAL : Stereo = Zweiton B/G
United Kingdom uses System I : Colour = PAL : Stereo = Nicam I
Note: Germany uses uses System B & G : Colour = PAL : Stereo = Zweiton B/G, so is very similar to Australia.
If your TV can be changed to suit other European Countries then it may work perfectly well in Australia.

Don't ditch your lovely UK TV's folks !
They won't tune correctly in Aus because of the PAL difference, but just add a cheap digi box and they will work fine ($100-$150). Everyone usually leaves their TV on AV or composite anyway, and use the digi to select channels. AFAIK, Australia digital carries all terrestrial channels too, so you won't miss out on anything unlike the UK.
I'm gutted I sold my Sony 29" flat screen which up to that point had given me years of excellent service.

It's wise to give your TV the "once over" before leaving the UK because we were planning to leave our TV until I re-read the user manual and found out it could receive PAL(all types), SECAM and NTSC. If you have a fairly modern TV it's possible that it will provide the same coverage.

Hiya
australia uses PAL, much like the UK,
however, they encode the sound on a different carrier (i think we're PAL b and they're PAL i, or something like that)
simple soloution, buy an Ozzie video recorder and use that for your telly tuning needs,
OR,
get an ozzie digibox
