Water ban?
Guys, is there a water ban in Melbourne? how does this work, can we clean the cars each week like we do here or is that a big no no. Watering the flowers etc, can that be done?
Cheers,

To be honest, if you plant your garden with native plants and accept that a car's natural state is dirty, you should be fine.

Apparently the city and surrounds are broken up into smaller councils as well, so you may need to contact the others directly, as they may all have slightly different restrictions, though this could be used as a guide.

For some reason, cars just don't get dirty here, unlike in the UK. There is not as much sh** on the roads for a start, the air is cleaner - less crap flying around. When it rains, it REALLY rains, so your car gets a good wash and looks like new the next day!

I dont think you are allowed to wash the cars at all. You may take them to a car wash which has a water recycling plant but definitely not a bucket and hose job on the front lawn! Car washing is usually one of the first things to go when there are water restrictions (and Melbourne's dams are still incredibly low) along with washing the pavement.
Not so long ago a chap in Sydney got killed for watering his garden on the "wrong" day - he was actually watering it on the right day but an econazi had a go at him and the chap died as a result of the altercation.
I never thought anyone would pass up a good excuse not to wash the car!!!!

Totally agree with that Steve!

I washed my car for the first time in 3 months yesterday. I didn't realise I'd bought a white one

Take a look at the gardens on most houses on realestate pages! Some very brown patchy things that pass for lawns. Guess that would answer your question

Re: Water ban?
So you can't wash your car, but you can pay someone else to do it! You can wash the windows and lights and spot clean bird/bat poo etc.

Re: Water ban?
Or get a water tank and use the rain water to do whatever you like. Its the new Australian way and about the only way you can use water without being pelted with rocks and ridiculed by small children jeering

They have automatic laser guided car washes here that use recycled water - use these.
"If its brown flush it down, if its yellow let it mellow"
Look at your water consumption at the moment - here in Melbourne we are down to 300 litres per day for 2 adults and 1 toddler.

AFAKI The Gold Coast's water supply is ok now: the Hinze dam is full and they wanted to lift the water restrictions here. The State have told them no because it would send out the wrong messages.
I think Brisbane have a problem still because their dams didn't catch much of the recent rain.
Haven't washed my car yet, doesn't need it.

I've always been very pessimistic about the water situation, but too be honest I think Brisbane is pretty much out of the woods now. Not that the situation is perfect but we're not going to get to that 5% or less capacity in the dams before recycling/desalination comes online that the state government was planning for.
If the Hinze Dam was connected to the water grid then I could understand the need to keep the restrictions there......but as it isn't yet then people on the coast should benefit from some relaxing of the restrictions.
