Many cops have been dragged kicking and screaming from their specialist positions - like traffic, motorway and CID - back to plodding around council estates.

The worst thing in certainly in Melbourne is that they can take months to get the tickets out so you have no idea if you've been caught, at least in the UK don't they have to issue a ticket within a certain period or it's void? Ours was on the road from Esperance to Ravensthorpe over a two hour drive with nothing on the road, except the cop car who caught us doing 136 in a 120, we pleaded it's because we were going downhill at the time! Luckily he didn't catch us earlier going even faster - which is pretty amazing in a hired Toyota Corolla :lol: Anyway, luckily we were tourists at the time so we just paid the fine as we knew we'd be going back to WA at some point. We, I don't know why I say we because OH was driving at the time, also got caught in Perth with a copper disguised as a gardener by the roadside, cheeky sods! A friend of ours was caught just over the VIC border coming back from SA, again nothing on the road except the cop car, unfortunately because he was going 20k over the limit he got a months ban. What was weird is that the ban didn't start immediately but about 3 weeks later which was a pain as it ended up being during that really hot spell we had last year so meant him cycling to work during 40 degrees, he was not happy! It is ridiculous here that a clapped out old bogan car can be trundling around the roads, spewing out dirty exhaust, bits dropping off it, heaven knows what the brakes and tyres are like (more likely to cause an accident) and that is perfectly okay but you go 2ks over the limit and you're nabbed! What causes accidents here is lane changing, give me the M25 anyday compared to the Monash or the freeway out west! As the OP says no one is aware of what is going on around them they just drive in their own little bubbles! Mostly it's to raise revenue! |

Yes, this is a ridiculous aspect of the driving rules in Australia - it's an almost 3rd world situation and should not be allowed. A few years ago there was an horrific crash near us. 2 18/19yo killed, 2 paraplegic. What were they driving? A barely legal V8 Commodore with no insurance.

I was over in the UK recently and I didn't think the driving standard was that much better to be honest. Drivers are definitely more courteous and probably drive better at higher speeds but I didn't think that general driving standards were better than here. On the other hand, driving standards in Germany and Austria were very good. Driving there was a dream.

I wish people would use cruise control more often. I hate the numpties whose speed is linked directly to how much they are talking to their passenger or on the phone. i.e. the more they talk, the slower they drive holding everyone up. :thumbdown: They should be driving, not talking. :rolleyes: |

I had a friend who was speeding and was pulled over by the police. She said it was ok to speed in the UK, no surprise she got three points and a fine. What out for the school zones 40Kph only at certain times. New country new laws, expect to have fines and points if you don't abide by them.
I have to admit that driving on the motorways is a lot more chilled out in Aus than the UK, just a little slower. Get a car with cruise control, saves a fortune on fines. |

Hubby is the most careful driver, and never had any speeding tickets in his life until we came here. Came to Australia and got caught on the outskirts of town, they reckon he was doing 75 in 70 road. However we were not so sure and it was also a big hill and inbetween 2 speeding signs. We paid up but still unsure whether he was actually speeding. Ive since read that my town has been conning people by doing speeding inbetween speed signs and up hills. Which is how we got our fine. So even if your normally a careful driver your probably going to get stuck with a speeding fine sooner than later in Aus. Gems |
